Achraf Lazaar is no longer a Newcastle United player – Official statement

After a disastrous four and a half years on Tyneside, Toon flop Achraf Lazaar is no longer a Newcastle United player after a mutual agreement to end his contract was found today.

The left back has barely kicked a ball for us since Rafa Benitez signed him ahead of our 16/17 Championship season.

Moroccan international Lazaar, signed for a fee of £2m, was rumoured to be on a huge £35,000-per-week wages and made just four league appearances in a black-and-white shirt – meaning his time at the club may have cost us just over £2.5m for every league game!

Here’s the club statement confirming his departure, meaning he’s left several months before his deal was due to expire:

Newcastle United can confirm that defender Achraf Lazaar has left the club after mutually agreeing to end his contract.

The Morocco international arrived on Tyneside from Palermo in 2016 and made nine first team appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, as well as spending time on loan at Benevento, Sheffield Wednesday and Cosenza.

The club wishes Achraf well for the future.

Fair to say that clearing out this particular deadwood and getting him off the wage bill is a positive outcome for us!

Rafa Benitez’s worst signing a Newcastle United? He’ll take some beating!

All the best to Achraf, who’s now a free agent and on the lookout for a new club.
