NUFC hand trial to former Toon star’s son – and he’s started with a 7-goal classic vs Sunderland

The Toon have handed a trial to Cameron Ferguson – the son of former Toon Striker and Everton legend Duncan.

“Big Dunc” didn’t stay long on Tyneside and yet is still fondly remembered for his short time at Newcastle. Particularly that game against Man. Utd when he helped himself to a fabulous goal in a thumping 3 – 0 win.

Like most of his career though his time at The Toon was blighted by injuries. Had he stayed fit I think he would have stayed longer and could have ended up a legend.

His partnership with Shearer looked frightening and I just think it’s a shame we didn’t get to see more of the Big Fella in the black and white stripes. Perhaps, though, we’re getting the next best thing? If he turns out to be half as good as his dad then we have a player on our hands!

What a way to start as well for young Cameron, with a goal against the Mackem’s helping us to a thrilling 4 – 3 win at Whitley Park on Tuesday. See, he’s on his way to becoming a legend already! He also hit the woodwork and had a goal disallowed in what sounded like an all-action debut.

Like his Dad he’s a striker and has already had a spell at Everton, who let him go. He then went to Tranmere Rovers but with his contract due to expire there and not being offered a new one he was free to trail elsewhere and landed at Newcastle.

Perhaps it’s more of a punt as Newcastle look to review and reshape their junior ranks. The fact that he’s been released by both Everton and Tranmere does not perhaps work in his favour.

But then again the game is littered by successful players that failed to make the grade at one or more Clubs in their early years. Who knows, perhaps Ferguson and Newcastle may be the match they both need.

One thing’s for certain it’s going to be an interesting one to watch if he ends up earning a contract at the club!
