Newcastle set to sign Remi Savage on a three-year deal – The Athletic

The Athletic have revealed that Newcastle United have won the race to sign Liverpool talent Remi Savage.

According to their man on Merseyside, James Pearce, the 19-year-old defender recently rejected a one-year contract extension at Liverpool and will instead arrive at St James’ Park this summer.

Savage is a centre-back who can also operate at left-back, with The Athletic reporting that the Reds will receive a compensation fee of around £250,000 when he puts pen to paper on Tyneside.

The curly-haired defender – who has previously named Dutch superstar Virgil Van Dijk as his footballing idol – looks set to go straight into our U23 set up, becoming the second Academy arrival of 2021 after we snapped up former Leipzig full-back Matthew Bondswell back in March.

This comes after the club released a host of U23 talents earlier this month, with the likes of Owen Bailey, Yannick Toure and Ludwig Francillette all let go.

Savage, who was handed his Academy debut by Steven Gerrard, won the FA Youth Cup in 2018/19 and signed his first professional contract just last year.
