According to reports in Turkey, Newcastle have made a move for Fenerbahce midfielder İrfan Can Kahveci.
This comes from Yeni Asir, who claim that we’ve come forward with a ‘surprise offer’ for the 25-year-old – stating we have been ‘following the player for a long time’.
Kahveci was part of a disappointing Euro 2020 for Turkey, however he did score a stunner in their final game of the group stages against Switzerland.
He arrived at Fenerbahce in a £6m move from Basaksehir back in January, bagging six goals and five assists in all competitions across the 2020/21 season.
Yeni Asir state that we have previously made a bid of around £13m for the Super Lig star and are ‘looking for a cheap number eight’ this summer, claiming that his value has dropped after being a bit-part player for Turkey this summer.
So, a new name linked, but one that comes from a slightly dubious source.
He may fit the bill in terms of age, likely price-tag and the fact he’s a ball-playing midfielder – something we lack outside of Jonjo Shelvey – yet this is another one to take with a pinch of salt.
After all, I can’t remember the last time a Turkish paper got something right when it came to Newcastle United transfer rumours!
You can watch his stunner at Euro 2020 below (just incase there ends up being some truth in this one), with this strike flying in past Fabian Schar’s Switzerland:
