Matty Longstaff move sanctioned by Newcastle United – Report

Newcastle United have finally given Matty Longstaff the green light to leave on loan, according to The Chronicle.

Lee Ryder reports that the 21-year-old has turned down moves to Scotland, with Championship trio Sheffield Utd, Blackburn and Huddersfield Town now battling to secure his signature.

Matty – the younger of the two Longstaff brothers – has barely kicked a ball since his breakthrough season in 2019/20, and started just four times last campaign.

Both brothers’ contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, with any potential loan move for Longstaff junior likely to be make or break for the midfielder.

As for Sean, the Daily Mail reported yesterday that we are ‘open to offers’ for the former Blackpool loanee – real shame for a player who had been one of our brightest academy products in recent years.

Back to Matty, the arrival of Joe Willock combined with Bruce wanting another midfielder before the window shuts means game time will become even more scarce. For the benefit of his own career at senior level, a move away for the 2021/22 season is his best option.

Let’s hope a Championship move is fixed up soon at a club ready to give him the game time he needs.
