New report claims NUFC could hijack deal for Lyon star closing in on Premier League move

Another day, another new name linked with a move to St James’ Park.

This time it’s Lyon wide man Maxwel Cornet, with 90min reporting that we are considering hijacking Burnley’s bid to bring him to the Premier League.

The Clarets have agreed a £15m deal to sign the Ivory Coast international, however it’s claimed late interest has arrived from both ourselves and West Ham.

Cornet, 24, is a versatile winger who has played a lot of football at left wing-back over the past year in France.

Some outlets are reporting that he’ll seal a big money move to Burnley and become their highest paid player, yet 90min reckon we’re weighing up a late bid.

Given the fee he’d demand and the fact we are fairly well stocked in wide areas, this feels like nothing more than paper talk and potential non starter.

Bruce has talked up loan deals at best after we spent the majority, if not all, of our budget on a £25m deal for Joe Willock, with The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards also reporting similar in a sobering transfer update just yesterday.

Not only that, it’s been clear for some time that the signing of another midfielder or athletic centre-back is Bruce’s top priority, so I can’t see us bringing in another wing-back when Jamal Lewis – a player we paid £13.5m for last summer – can’t get into the side at present.
