Matty Longstaff closing in on surprise move as Toon hold transfer talks – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are in talks with Aberdeen over a surprise move to Scotland for the Toon talent.

With the 21-year-old’s contract set to expire next summer as things stand, it’s thought the midfielder will sign an extension on Tyneside before leaving the club on loan.

A host of Championship clubs had been linked with a move for the local lad, with The Chronicle recently stating that Blackpool, Nottingham Forest, Blackburn, Huddersfield and Sheffield United were all keen.

Now, The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has revealed late on Thursday night that Aberdeen are now in talks with the club over a deal that would see the Academy product spend the 2021/22 season in the SPL.

Matty made the bench in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash against Burnley, continuing his struggle for game time since breaking through under Bruce almost two years ago.

For me, this would be a bizarre move when there’s host of Championship clubs lining up to give him regular game time at a much higher standard. Surely the second tier is a much better gauge of where he’s at than Scotland?

Here’s what Bruce had to say about his future earlier this week:

“It’s something [a loan move] that we have decided might be best for Matty.

“We have had one or two enquiries and hope something happens in the next couple of days.

He needs to get some game time.

He’s had a tough, horrible year.

He needs to go and play somewhere – at the moment, here, he can’t find a way in.”
