Newcastle and England legend Peter Beardsley insists his passion for football is “stronger than ever” as he launches his half-term soccer school this month.
Beardsley, who had two successful spells at The Magpies in the 1980s and 1990s, will host a week-long course at Kingston Park Stadium, starting on Monday, October 25 and finishing on Friday, October 29.
The former Toon forward will be directly involved in the sessions, with all other coaches FA qualified and DBS checked.
Speaking to NUFCBlog.co.uk, Beardsley said: “The idea is for kids to come and have fun.
“It’s something I’ve been thinking about doing for a long time and should have done it sooner.
“When kids have a week off school, a lot of them aren’t sure what to do. This will be somewhere that boys and girls can come and have fun together with kids from the same area and of similar age.
“Kenny Wharton, who I played alongside for Newcastle, will be with me. We’ll have other coaches there too, it’s a big thing for us and we are really looking forward to it.”
Beardsley’s hunger for the game has never waned. At 60-years-old, he still absorbs as much of the sport as possible but feels now is the time to give something back.
“This is for the kids, most importantly, but I also love the game,” he added.
“My passion for football is stronger than ever and I’m wanting to give back.
“I love kicking a ball; football has been my life. I just want to be on the grass. I’m 60-year-old now, I still play five-a-side and I love it.
“I’ve always enjoyed helping people in football, it doesn’t matter what standard they are.
“I’ll be there every minute of every day.
“Hopefully, by the end of the week, everyone would have learned something.”
Beardsley is also hosting a talk-in night at the Tyneside Irish Centre on November 26, where Toon fans have their chance to reminisce about the iconic Entertainers Era at St James’ Park with one of Newcastle United’s all-time greats.
Speaking about the event, Beardsley said: “We are really lucky to have so many special memories from that era. To play for Newcastle, as I did, was so special.
“I’ve got lots of funny stories to talk about from that time… some of them don’t even involve me!
“What’s good about it is people can come and ask their own questions.
“I’m really looking forward to it.”
Peter Beardley’s Soccer School is available for kids aged 6-14, with spaces priced at £15 a day or £45 for the week. Email [email protected] to book your slot.
