Newcastle 0-3 Chelsea: Another tough watch on Tyneside as grim stats say it all

Few expected anything other than a Chelsea win this afternoon, but a second half collapse and resultant 3-0 defeat made for another difficult watch for the sold out crowd inside St James’ Park today.

One stat that perhaps says it all is the fact we had our one and only shot on target in the 84th minute. 21% possession never helps, however it wasn’t really a contest if the truth be told.

Defeats like this won’t define our season – Chelsea are European champions and top of the league for a reason – but there can be no denying that we are in dire need of a new manager; who has a big job on his hands to keep us up and build immediate momentum when he arrives.

We defended a little better in the first half and looked relatively organised for 65 minutes, but I wouldn’t say we were ‘competitive’ – something Jones has described us as after the match. After all, the lack of pressing, belief or attacking threat on offer left few inside the stadium feeling we’d hold on for a precious point or pull off an unlikely win.

With us sat like sitting ducks and struggling to get out, Chelsea found that all important breakthrough via a thumping strike from Reece James just after the hour mark – and they never looked back from there.

That goal was followed by another from the England international just 12 minutes later, with Jorginho scoring from the spot after Kai Havertz was brought down by Karl Darlow to make it 0-3.

The result leaves us stuck in 19th on just four points. To make matters worse, results elsewhere didn’t go our way, either.

Burnley beat Brentford 3-1 to move above Leeds and out of the drop zone, Southampton won at Watford to move seven clear of us and Crystal Palace stunned Man City with a 0-2 win at the Etihad – although I’m not so sure they’re relegation contenders based on their impressive start to the season.

Back to the game itself, I actually turned to my brother and said ‘that might be the closest we get to scoring today’ when Ryan Fraser got in down the left and fizzed a ball across the box just a two minutes in. Unfortunately, I was right!

Another frustration was Saint-Maximin today. He was way below his best at Palace and, aside from a stunning piece of skill that saw him leave Chilwell for dead, he was largely anonymous today and cut a frustrated figure.

The referee was poor, giving a few dubious yellow cards and missing a few clear fouls on ASM and Wilson, but our defending for some of Chelsea’s goals was even worse.

Graeme Jones has said all the right things and can take some credit for a solid point at Palace last weekend, but the team selection today left me and many others scratching their head.

We were crying out for Schar’s ball-playing ability, not to mention the fact Fernandez must be watching Clark – who struggled once again – and wondering how he’s being overlooked.

Dubravka’s ability to organise a defence is also something I feel we’re missing, while Almiron and Willock’s pace, energy and ability to break forward could’ve helped us carry much more of a threat on the counter?

Seems easy to say in hindsight, but these are changes many – including myself – were calling for prior to today’s game. Maybe Jones wanted continuity, yet a line up that didn’t work at Palace never felt likely to trouble the European champions.

With a trip to Brighton up next and us still without a win 10 games into the not so new season, it’s absolutely vital the new owners appoint a new man capable of galvanizing a group of players crying out for some fresh direction.

A final word must go to Wor Flags, who put on another brilliant display in the Gallowgate End.

I hope he brings Pau Torres with Him

Prem – that would be some signing mate. I looked at the signings he made at Arsenal as well and he signed Saliba (I think that’s the spelling – young French CB), Guendousi (I don’t think that’s the spelling either). Neither have settled at Arsenal and I’d be happy for those 2 to come in too.

I wouldn’t mind Lacazette or Nketiah either – I think both have contracts running out.

  2. I’m not saying I want to buy up all of Arsenals players here by the way – I just think they have some good ones being massively overlooked by Arteta at the moment – I’m not sure how willing they are likely to be to sell to us either ??

  3. PremAndUp:
I think Pau Torres and Schar would be a good CB partnership. Emery plays 4-3-3

Prem – I’m not really a fan of Schar like. Maybe we’ve not seen him at his best & Emery could get that out of him.
He did buy and regularly play David Luiz at Arsenal though & I think Schar is a similar type of CB.

Emery also bought Leno who can’t get a sniff at Arsenal now as well.

      (Quote)

  4. If we do get Emery (which looks very likely now) and he plays a 4-3-3 system, then I think I could well see us going for Osmane Dembele as the right sided forward – ASM on the left and Wilson through the middle.

      (Quote)

  5. That would be nice
I’d like 3 players in January assuming Emery
Pau Torres. Left footed centreback with pace, currently playing for Villareal
    Denis Zakaria. DM from Borussia
    and Dembele
I know that leaves us reliant on Wilson but if we can stay up it might be easier to get players in the summer

  7. Well if latest reports are accurate we are looking like ending up with Howe as no other bu gger wants to come 😳
What on earth are the new owners playing at, talk about Rome burning while Nero fiddled 😳
Starting to make Jabba look like a pro club owner.
Embarrassing as ever, nowt changes except everyone now hates us, still makes a change from laughing at us, then again maybe they still are.

  8. Crazy situation… Spurs make the change in 48 hours. We cannot make a decision in 3 weeks! Also, I think we have been left in such a mess by Ashley, through lack of investment over years, leaving us with a sh.ite team and by Bruce with his extreme mismanagement of that team, that we are in a seriously bad place.

I would not be surprised if we end up with fat Sam for the rest of the season to keep us up! ??

  9. Apparently a main concern for Emery is the lack of clear direction and plan from the new board.

    Bit of a concern!

We were linked to several DOF’s before. We should be getting that position sorted and not approaching managers until there is a clear plan and structure in place for success.

We are looking like a bit of a joke yet again.

  13. He just didn’t like what he heard. DOF appointed above him. Howe or him? That’s the rumour.
Underwhelmed with Howe but at least he knows the league and the Toon. But dear me the new guys haven’t a clue.

I’d take Howe to be honest. That’s if he’s still interested.

Someone needs to get Charnley back on stationary and off the manager negotiations

I would really like Jones to not be in charge of the Brighton game.

    Unchanged team 🙂 🙂 🙂

I can see even Villa getting a new manager before us now, and they haven’t yet sacked the current one. Joke.

Anyway, the Dubai Uber Eats for Brucie was:

    Bacon and Sausage Roll
    Bacon and Sausage Bagette
Bacon and Sausage Croissant with Butter and Lard
    Loads of payoff money
    Steak Bake
Sausage, Bacon and Cheese melt with double Bacon
    Glazed Ring Doughnut – OOh-errr-Mattron!

Would you like a vegan sausage roll Steve? That would be delightfully pleasing, but I am on a diet.

Nuno Santos and Eddie Howe have Championship and Premiership experience so either would be our best bet for manager.
I would go for Nuno in the hope he could lure some decent young Portuguese players to the club.

  24. From the shambolic to the absolute pathetic!!.

What the hell are they playing at man???.

Keith Downie suggesting it’s because they don’t have a football person on the board yet, a chief executive or DoF – someone used to making these negotiations and laying out the project … WHY THE F@CK NOT?????. They have been buying a b@st@rd football club for the last FOUR YEARS!!!. They paid their deposit 18 months ago and got the keys to SJP around 2 month ago now – so WHY have they not employed a DoF yet????.

Clearly they are incapable of hiring a manager – a manager who yesterday all but said he was on his way.

Now we are back to a shortlist of out of work managers & we STILL haven’t hired one!!.

I wasn’t impressed with Staveley when she rang into Talksport and had it out with Simon Jordan – I thought he ran circles round her.
It was her that fronted out the Sky Sports cameras and made all the big promises once the deal went through – and thus far, her and her pals have done an awful job I’m afraid.

Downie said there was bound to be teething problems – these aren’t teething problems – this is premier league survival and they better start understanding that and quick.

  25. Maybe a bit harsh, Sharpy. They’ve only had the club 3 weeks or so and didn’t know it was happening until a few days before. I don’t think it would have been reasonable for them to have asked a DoF to wait in the wings for 18 months while they might or might not have bought the club.

It’s not a good look but maybe Emery agreed to take the job and then changed his mind?

They’ve never run a football club before so to expect them to get it right immediately is a big ask IMO.

Stu – Staveley had involvement in the City sale so whilst she may not have bought or ran a club herself, she would still have connections – they’ve certainly had 18 months to be putting the feelers out and and getting a plan together.
It’s 4 weeks tomorrow they got the keys, which doesn’t sound long – but when you see Spurs sack a manager & recruit one of the worlds best as a replacement – in 24hrs or less … a month is an awfully long time.

When you consider most of the ‘targets’ are out of work themselves, AND keen on the job if reports are to be believed, then what’s the delay??.

Again, if reports are to be believed Overmars is keen to become DoF – but if that’s papertalk, they WILL be others who would jump at the chance.

The Reubens came from QPR where Sir Les is DoF – why not get him – even in a short term advisory capacity.

These are business people dealing with the richest people in the world.

It’s shoddy imo & we should expect better.

      (Quote)

  27. I agree with Sharpy that this is dragging on now. None of us knew who Graeme Jones was before he arrived and yet he is our Manager now. By default. By Ashley. By Charnley.

He has absolutely sucked in his 2 games in charge. Wrong players, wrong tactics, wrong formation. Just what you would expect from Ashley/Charnley/ Bruce.

We didnt know who he was and the sooner he is gone and we can forget him, the better.

Bit different to the other managers mentioned but hopefully he can sort us out if he comes in.

Why the hell can we not play our cards close to our chest??? – do we never learn????. If Howe doesn’t work out for whatever reason – how does that then make us look again???.

I have no issues with it being Howe to be fair – I don’t think there’s much difference between him and the likes of Fonseca, Favre or Martinez – none are a perfect fit & none are what I would class as elite.

  32. Been reading quotes on The Mag with B’mouth fans saying we dont have the right players to play in a Howe system. We probably do though. They have been injured or on the bench. With Dummett fit and Schar we have centre backs who can actually use their feet. Having watched the 3 at the back Bruce/Jones system it has often felt like we are playing with 3 Mike Williamsons.

Lewis and Manquillo can play as well, so there is some hope.

In Midfield Willock is good with the ball and Hayden is servicable. Not sure what Howe would do with Shelvey and Longstaff.

The atatck is quick and skillful, but were wasted on Bruce/Jones.

We will probably need 4 players in Jan if we are not to play hoofball.

    Just get it sorted out!!!

  34. I didnt mind Mike Williamson, you just had to have peak Collocinni next to him, otherwise you know the ball was going sideways or back to the goalie. That’s how I feel with Clark and Lascelles. Fernandez also chooses the easy option too often and in his case it is kicking it out for a corner. I would still pick him over the other 2 though.

1st order of business for any new Manager is to take the Captancy off Lascelles. I am not saying that he might not be useful but he shouldnt be an automatic pick.

  35. What’s the record for minimum possession in a PL game? We have managed 25% and 21% in the last 2 games. Do you think we can get into the teens? If we keep Darlow in goal with his hoofs to touch I think that is possible.

      (Quote)

  36. Oh God. If Jones is in charge again it will be another seemingly decent press conference followed by a **** team and tactics. He better start Dubs, Miggy and Willock. It was the same old same old even harking back to Pards. But also the Bruce 8-0-2.

We know what his plan was because it was the Pards plan. Keep it tight for the first half and go in at nil-nil or nil-1 at worst. Go for it after 60-70 mins with the subs. The problem is that all of the players are knackered after 70 mins of chasing shadows. Happened with Spurs, Palace and Chelsea. Will happen again at Brighton if “the talker” is still in charge.

Brighton 3, NUFC 1 unless Jones wakes up.

  38. Looks like Jones in charge for Saturday. I imagine it will be a carbon copy of the game against Chelsea. Jones should just go for it! We won’t win sitting back.

      (Quote)

  39. Do you think any of the zoom journos will be allowed to ask Jones perfectly valid questions like:

Why did you leave Miggy, Dubs and Willock on the bench?

What were you thinking sending the same team and formation out against Chelsea that were a Benteke away from being slaughtered at Palace?

What was that rubbish you said about Fernandez? Does that even make any sense to you having read it back?

Do you know that Ritchie is not a left back?

Do you know that Lascelles is a red card waiting to happen against Brighton?

Why are you playing Bruce’s players and formation?

      (Quote)

  40. Well I still think it’s all been a bit of a shambles since they took over and 1st appointment should have been a DOF with which a clear plan should have been etched out before looking at managers.

Looks like it’s Howe though and to be fair he did a great job with Bournemouth. They were always going to get relegated eventually due to their stature. The fact he got them there in the first place and made waves for a while means he does know a thing or two at this level. I hope if he is appointed, we all get behind him and don’t expect miracles pre-January with the poor squad he will have to work with. The next manager needs patience from the Toon Army – and the board needs to make sure there is a clear plan – then smash it as soon as the window opens in New Year.

      (Quote)

  41. I am OK with Howe and really happy he is bringing his own coaches because I have totally lost faith in Jones. Have him be the throw-in coach so they can honour his contract. Or the goalie kicking coach. We need both as we are terrible at both.

I was willing to give Jones a chance until he proved himself to be an idiot.

I have seen Howe interviewed many times and he always comes across well.

Hopefully, there is no spite from Fraser after their time at Bmth. Wilson seems quite chilled so I dont think there will be anything untoward there.

Crazy isn’t it Eric? We could’ve looked very professional and efficient, but instead it’s been a shambles. We could’ve had a few more points too!

  46. Gilly: Jones depressed me more than Bruce. I knew what we were getting with the Cabbage and could adjust my expectations. I had no clue about Jones. Had never heard of him and then all the journos started bigging him up like he was the second coming of Peter Taylor (the Brian Clough Peter Taylor).

    And then, and then…

He selects THAT team for Palace!!!

And proceeds to select the exact same team the week after for Chelsea.

As I have said. If they have some sort of guaranteed contract with him then he needs to be on gardening leave. I think Bruce has a farm. He could tend to the cabbages? If he stays on the NUFC coaching staff I will say it agian – put him on throw ins.

  47. Also Gilly: I bought a camera today. A Nikon Z50. It is pretty fancy and only weighs 1 lb 4oz. It has all the features of a DSLR that would have cost 5 grand 5 years ago. I have taken some great pictures with my phone but it is hard to see the screen in bright sunlight. I thought about upgrading to the newest phone but this APS-C camera was cheaper and why spend more than $1k just to upsgrade a small sensor phone which does everything else fine when this new Nikon will outlast it.

      (Quote)

  48. We have to get behind Howe if indeed he is the new Manager. He is a proven commodity unlike Jones. I know B’mth were relegated but he brought them up from the 4th Division and kept them in the PL for 5 years with an 11,000 seater ground. That is some accomplishment!

At a minimum Eddie is here until the end of the season. I cannot see us doing a Watford and changing Managers every 8 games.

He also seems like a decent guy and doesnt stab people in the back like Bruce or talk a good game and then select baffling teams like Jones.

So, it is time to cast off all negativity from the Bruce/Ashley/Steves/Jones eras and get behind our new Manager. There will be bumps in the road along the way but we are only 10 games into the season so we have time. 11 games after the Jones (un)inspired loss on Saturday 🙂

Stu – I feel the same mate. I’m not buzzing, but I feel positive about it.
He wasn’t at Burnley long enough to judge, but certainly at Bmth he did a fantastic job.
I think he’s coming in with a point to prove & the fact he has 3 former players could be a real good thing – especially Fraser. I think that lad has a lot more in the tank & if Howe can get him playing he could be an untapped gem in the squad.

I looked at the defenders he had at Bmth and other maybe Ake, none were better than what we have now – yet they defended well as a unit.

I agree with Sham, and said the same the other day. We have to be realistic with what he does between now and January – tough games and a limited squad.

But I’d be happy to get behind Howe if he comes in – despite the fact he’s probably the only one I didn’t have a bloody bet on!! ?

      (Quote)

  52. I’d be happy with Trippier like – good defender and dangerous with freekicks too.

I’d go after Trakowski too – taking him from Burnley would weaken them and could be key in a relegation battle – he’s a lot better than what we have too like.

If he went looking to Bmth, Phillip Billing would be a good buy for midfield.

      (Quote)

  53. I have skimmed a couple of blogs and some fans are worried about Howe’s tranfer and defensive record. On transfers they say he had 250 million and bought Ibe and Solanke. These players were very well thought of at the time and none of us would have complained if NUFC had bought them. You would also think that there will be a DoF to give him some help and to buy a few defenders – we certainly need them.

On Howe’s spending. I think most of that was later and 5 years in the PL would get you about 500 mil in TV money alone. They certainly wernt relying on gate receipts. Bournemouth are a tiny club, how they ever got to the PL is a miracle. It would be like Hartlepool winning the FA Cup.

I am not saying I am an expert on Howe. I am glad he is bringing his own people in because the Steves are useless and Jones has shown nothing so far. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow. If he picks the majority of that team again my TV better watch out because there might be some flying shoes.

We are the late game. It will be a circus!

      (Quote)

  54. Sharpy: we need someone for set pieces. Ours are just so inconsistent. Longstaff and Ritchie hit the 1st man on a lot of corners. And dont talk to me about the Shelvey floaters. I think Fraser is better but he hardly plays. I think some of this is coaching because our throw ins are **** as well. How many times do we see the opposition press us and we give the ball away? Between that, the Lascelles back passes and the hoofs no wonder we have 25% and 21% possession in the last 2 weeks.

      (Quote)

  55. The Chronic are saying Howe would bring his Assistant Manager. That is Graeme Jones’s current job. He also has 2 coaches, so that is the Steves replaced. I know I have been hard on Jones but he deserves it for our start to the season and the last 2 disasterous games.

I am seeing the Chronic and Eds say that Howe and Jones know each other. How well? They all bump into each other at games and gala events like the PFA awards. My guess is Howe and Jones know each other about as well as I know the butcher at the local deli.

      (Quote)

  56. The papers have cut this Jones guy some incredible slack. They built him up like he was the second coming of Peter Taylor (Clough’s Assistant) when he first arrived. He was given credit whenever anything went right and Bruce got the blame for anything going wrong. It was happening on blogs as well, mainly Eds but someone wrote a story on here before Chelsea saying he was a breath of fresh air. Then there was England duty. If you read anything NUFC related it was Jones who got us to the semi-final of the Euros. And now it is the talking. Whoop-de-do he can string a sentence together, at least he could before those rediculous Fernandez quotes. He was good in comparison to Bruce, and that is not saying a lot.

The sooner he is gone, the better. A demotion at the very least. The press have not put him on the spot at all and he will probably get away with it again because all the talk will be about Howe. I doubt there will be a mention of 21% possession and a 3 nil home loss with the same team that was a Benteke away from total humiliation at Palace.

I just dont understand how Jones got so much praise and so little scrutiny when he had done basically nowt before joining us. And he was a Bruce/Charnley hire. How well has that gone in the past?

  57. I read The Chronicle press conference quotes and as I expected they gave Jones a free ride again. No mention of the awful team selections and diabolical performances. They are only interested in Eddie Howe.

Jones has had a charmed life at NUFC. That cannot continue. He needs to be demoted, or better still, paid off. We need rid of all remnanants of the Ashley/Bruce era. All Steves and Graeme gone and 1 Lee gone as well.

  58. Yes, I am dwelling, but that is because nobody else is. Nobody is questioning selections and tactics and not just for the last 2 games, the whole season. Bruce got all of the (DESERVED) flak and Jones got off scot free. Should I call him Teflon Graeme from now on? With Howe bringing in 3 of his coaching staff there is just no room for Jones. They will be stepping on each others toes. Cone duty until the end of the season and then shove off with my boot up your ****.
