Eddie Howe considering surprise move for Geordie defender on NUFC’s books as a kid – Report

According to The Mail, Eddie Howe is considering a late bid for Brighton’s versatile defender, Dan Burn.

The 29-year-old was actually born in Blyth and is a boyhood Newcastle fan, being someone who was on the club’s books as a kid before being released at the age of 11.

Almost two decades later, he’s now doing a solid job under Graham Potter, being a versatile defender who is capable of playing at centre-back and left-back.

Being able to play in the latter position is particularly impressive given he stands 6ft 7′ tall, however it must be said that he is no slouch, having a surprising turn of pace for a player of his size and being relatively comfortable on the ball; which you have to be to play in this Brighton side.

That said, this would seem an incredibly underwhelming signing if he’s our ‘plan B’ to Brazilian star Diego Carlos.

Burn actually revealed last week that he rejected a move to Newcastle earlier in his career, explaining why he opted to join Fulham instead as an 18-year-old at Bury:

“In League Two I got the feeling that I would love to make a living out of the game and become a professional, but Fulham was on a different level – it gave me the chance to kick on.

“Actually, at the time I signed, Newcastle ended up coming in for me and matching the deal but I’d already been down to Fulham, had a tour of the ground, and done my medical, so I was happy to sign for them.

“It was a blessing because it meant I could just get away and concentrate on my football.

“I was 18 so would have been going out with my mates all the time if I’d been back in the north east. Not that they were a bad influence, but the temptations at that age were not there with me moving away.

“I got to go away and learn my trade and it’s worked out well.”

  1. Aaron Hickey who is a highly regarded left back currently plying his trade in Serie A with Bologna would be a great addition to the squad
