Paul Merson “shocked” NUFC didn’t try to sign this player in January – ‘He’d be the best they’ve bought!’

Paul Merson is baffled Newcastle United didn’t make a late move for former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

The Welshman was told he had no future at Juventus last month and was heavily linked with several Premier League clubs – including Newcastle – however he ended up sealing a surprise move to Rangers on deadline day.

The deal is an initial loan which includes an option to buy for the SPL giants, and Merson can’t quite believe we didn’t make a move – feeling he would’ve been the “best player we bought by a country mile” had we gone in for the 31-year-old.

Here’s what he told Sky Sports News on deadline day:

“I’m very shocked there isn’t Premier League clubs in for him.

“He’s a player that scores goals from midfield, a good player and I’m shocked there aren’t more clubs in for him.

“You look at Newcastle, who are buying players left, right and centre….he would be the best player they’ve bought by a country mile!”

Merson also said this on deadline day, suggesting some of our new signings won’t be around for long if we survive (Wood, Burn and Targett?):

Back to Aaron Ramsey, here’s what he had to say after completing a surprise late move to Rangers:

‘I am really pleased to be joining a club like Rangers, where there is so much to look forward to between now and May.’

‘I had a number of offers on the table, but none matched the magnitude of this club, with European football and the chance to play in front of 50,000 fans every other week.

‘I have had some fantastic conversations with the manager and Ross Wilson, and I’m really looking forward to working with both of them, and to meeting the supporters.’
