Newcastle 3-1 Everton: Trippier & Targett shine as Toon make it two wins on the trot!

What a night at St James’ Park and what a huge win!

A brilliant atmosphere, a Kieran Trippier masterclass, a superb debut from Matt Target and finally back-to-back wins for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

It was not only a huge victory on a night where Watford lost at West Ham and Burnley only managed a point against a poor Man Utd, but one that takes us to within a single point of Everton.

The results takes us out of the bottom three, up to 18 points and two clear of safety after 22 games, giving us a huge boost ahead of Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa.

Eddie Howe has made one change from our win at Elland Road, replacing the injured Paul Dummett with Aston Villa loanee Matt Targett.

Surprisingly, Bruno Guimaraes was only named on the bench – a decision that didn’t go down well with Toon fans on social media before the game – but one that was justified in the end based on the result!

The game started with us boxing Everton in with some good pressing, however we were never really able to control the game in that first half. Whether it was disjointed attacks via hopeful balls to Wood or a lack of cohesion in midfield, we weren’t quite clicking against a side who looked there for the taking.

Typically, it was them who struck first. A horrible goal to concede in more ways than one, with two deflections working in their favour before the ball cannoned in off Jamaal Lascelles.

Thankfully, the skipper made up for that unfortunate own goals just one minute later, as he rose highest from a Trippier corner and saw his header go in off Mason Holgate after the ball came back off the crossbar.

So, two own goals, but the momentum was back with us and the atmosphere inside St James’ Park picked up a few notches.

We should’ve been in the lead at the break, with Wood heading straight at Pickford, Joelinton losing his footing when the ball was cut back by Saint-Maximin and Fraser’s header blocked after a brilliant ball in from Targett.

The second half arrived and we started with a purpose about our play. We were getting higher up the pitch, upping the intensity, putting Everton on the back foot in front of the Gallowgate – and we were rewarded soon after on 56 minutes as Fraser bundled in from a Saint-Maximin cross!

The wind was in our sails and it felt like a third was coming. Everton just about hung on, then enjoyed periods of possession without ever causing us much trouble, but the win was sealed with 10 minutes on the clock.

After Fraser was chopped down after cutting inside, Kieran Trippier stepped up and curled a right-footed free kick past Pickford’s little arms and into the bottom corner. Scenes of sheer jubilation followed all around St James’ Park and it felt like we’d not only secured the win, but turned a corner.

No nervy end to the game with backs against the wall and finger nails in bits, but a comfortable end to the game that also saw Bruno Guimaraes come on to a huge reception for his first appearance in black and white.

We could’ve made it four in the end – Murphy hit the post and Saint-Maximin was unlucky not to score after some brilliant work from Guimaraes in the build up – however we came away comfortable 3-1 winners in a night full of positives on Tyneside.

STARTING 11: Dubravka – Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Targett – Shelvey, Willock, Joelinton – Fraser, Wood, Saint-Maximin.

SUBS: Darlow, Burn, Krafth, Manquillo, Longstaff, Guimaraes, Murphy, Almiron, Gayle

Next up, Aston Villa on Sunday!

  1. Probably the most enjoyable game of the season and it is always good to watch the antics of the T-Rex Mackem at SJP. Can’t fault any of the players and Howe is now left with the difficult job of choosing 3 from 4 in MF. None of today’s starters deserve to be “rested” for Villa but I dont see how you can leave out such a high profile signing as Bruno. Remember Willock cost 25 mil so he wasnt exactly cheap either.

Regarding Everton. I had said before the game that their squad was overrated, and they got too much credit from the usual suspect pundits who think they are too good to go down. The “friends of Frank” will defend him until the bitter end, but he has a lot to prove because he only became Chelsea manager because of his status as a player there. He does have Championship experience so that might help next year.

I am not getting ahead of myself/counting chickens. We still have a long way to go but with that crowd behind us I think we will intimidate a few teams. It was like the old days and a far cry from when Cabbage was Manager where there always seemed like it was hard to get going as you were supporting someone who you knew would eventually take us down. That may still happen this year, but at least there is now hope.

We have thrown away points this year and have had some terrible decisions against us. Even in the Cabbage’s games we have been unlucky (his luck evened out from previous years). We really should be around where Brentford and Palace are but, ho hum, them’s the breaks.

  2. And I know Dele hasnt played much but he looked a shadow of his former self. Remember, they bought him, they didnt loan him. It was a very dodgy deal where Everton owe Spurs money after 20 games. I am sure it was to get around FFP and had we done it there would be howls of derision from Simon Jordan. I would say also from Agbonlahor but I doubt he would understand the maths.

  4. It was a strange feeling watching nufc last night.. I did so with a sense of anticipation of something good happening and not desperation of wanting something good to happen

It’s hard from another country to get a sense of wether last night could be a start of something and not just another false hope. A quick scout around media, pundits and fans shows there is a feeling its the former

I hope so and it’s going to be a ride over the next few months to the end of the season

  5. Lots of praise for St Max, and rightly so. I agree with Frank that he was unplayable in the second half. But may I point out again that some fans have short memories and wanted him dropped a few weeks ago. I question their understanding of football sometimes.

Lascelles did much better. Maybe what he needed was someone to pass to and now he has the 2 fullbacks. Still think he has played awful all season and would rather have a look at Burn as CB but I fear we may need BDB as a fullback this weekend.

Eric – I also agree that in the 2nd half he was unplayable … but for a large period of the first half he was a bloody nightmare for playing with his head down & dribbling into traffic.
I love the lad, and I wonder if part of him feels that with Wilson out it’s all on him?!. But I think it showed in the 2nd half that once he brought his teammates into it he was far more effective & we looked an offensive threat.

He was excellent, but wasn’t my MOTM. Still can’t decide between Willock, Trippier and Fraser. Trip is the obvious but I want to give it to Willock because he’s had a lot of questions about him & many would have been a bit annoyed he got in ahead of Bruno – but he justified his selection last night.

I’ve also read criticism for Wood & Targett – can’t understand people digging Targett like, I thought he was really good on his debut and gave a real balance to our defence.

On Wood, he should have scored his header for sure. But his work rate and pressing from the front was really good. His flicks didn’t come off – but he WAS winning them against 3 big physical CBs. Maybe that’s just better communication needed between them during the game on where he’s able to put it based on the duels he’s having with the defenders.

As for his goal threat – the balls Trippier is putting in from set pieces, it’s only a matter of time.

Rob Lee said on BT Sport last night, once he gets off the mark & the confidence grows, he’ll get more.

I still thought he contributed a lot other than goals though.

  7. I also thought the fans & the atmosphere was unreal last night – as I was back when I could regularly get there through the Keegan era.

The flags are great to see & local hero is even more spine tingling when the ground is like that.

Olly – there was 5 of us shared the cost of 3 season tickets in the East stand near the gallowgate corner – it was both a financial thing and that between us we all worked weekends at different times.

The first game I ever went to was with my uncle & cousin when I was 8 or 9 year old – Mirandinha was our CF and we were sat in the East stand so it had to be there.

I started working shift 20 years ago now and only get 1 weekend off a month so don’t get anymore.

Eric – I hope that was just to get him more game time, score some goals & build his confidence.
I’m pleased he didn’t though. I know a lot will focus on the lack of goals in comparison to last season – and I could certainly do with chipping in with a few before the end of the season please – but the lad put a shift in for sure last night.

We had a seriously weak midfield earlier this season – no grit, no energy or physical presence to speak of really – far too easy to play against. But not now.

  13. Sharpy, mate. Bruce and Jones did not have our midfielders playing as midfieders. Even Miggy, who is a number 10, was playing defensive mid. We all saw it which is why we hated Bruce-ball.

  14. I am looking forward to seeing Everton continue their slump. 6 points out of 45 now. I dont really have anything against the Scouse Mackems but I do want to see the “Friends of Frank” pundits tie themselves in knots trying to defend him.

He took Derby from 6th to erm… 6th and they failed to get promotion in the playoff. He was appointed Chelsea boss due to his playing days and did OK, but not Abramovich OK. Now he gets a job at a relatively big club looking to move into a 500 million pound new stadium.

You can bet his pundit pals will not have a word said against him no matter what happens.

I know I’ve been critical about how long I think it’s taking them to put certain things into place – and I know it’s just that they want to make sure they are getting things right & I commend them for that … but some of them needed/need more urgency than they have/are showing.

The other thing I noticed last night was that Sir Gareth of Southgate was sat alongside them last night …. How does that work with the human rights brigade????

Bruce has managed to take WBA out of the playoff spots in his 1st game. I am not dwelling, really. I just want him to fail so will be keeping an eye on them. His son Alex is working for him again. I am sure there will be some complaints from him about NUFC fans trolling his Dad. However, I am sure Brucie Senior will have stacks of letters from NUFC fans saying they love him.

  18. I think everyone has their head buried in the sand about how in the **** Everton really are. “Friends of Frank” in the media just assume the feel good factor of the crafty c@ckney will see them through. But they have a **** squad and 4 first teamers are now out with long term injuries – Godfrey, Gray, Mina and Doucore.

You add to that Calvert-Lewin who was out a long time and rushed back but was staright in for treatment again.

I think it says a lot that Seamus Coleman is still playing for them. And they sold Digne.

Not sure if Dele is the answer but they also have the T-Rex Mackem who will cost them at least 1 game in the run in.

I will repeat again that they only have 6 points from the last 45 and they have lost 3 of their better players to injury in the last 2 games. They are bottom of the PL form league.

  20. I would suggest that Bruno and Joe are nailed on
    The we have a choice:
Shelvey gives creativity, but always at risk of picking up cards
    Willock gives energy and goals
Longstaff I would suggest gives industry
and Miggy, if played in front of B&J could give energy and creativity in a 4-2-3-1

      (Quote)

  21. Roy Keane turns down the Mackem job. I dont know why anyone would take on that poisoned chalice at this point. They have virtually no chance of automatic promotion and if they get into the playoffs that is a crapshoot. Then, when they get to the offseason they will be sacked with promises to a new manager of a transfer kitty and new players.

All I can think of is a Manager would take it for the money. They should have hired Steve Bruce again as he would be happy for a 3 year contract and to be sacked after 4 months, trousering the loverly payoff he would get.

      (Quote)

  22. Prem: I am trying not to get too downhearted about Miggy. He has had pretty much no end product for the past year, but there is a player in there. Was he “Bruced”? Or “Jonesed”? He has no goals and no assists in the last year.

I said it when Eddie arrived, and he said all of the right things about Graeme Jones, that Jones would be gone at the end of the season. I still think he will be and it looks like he is in the background now.

      (Quote)

  23. Watching Villa last night and it seems an obvious thing to say but Courtinho was their biggest threat – every meaningful attack went through him.

I would play Bruno and have him man mark Courtinho.

Joelinton & Willock would be my other 2 in there – them against Ramsey & McGinn will be another interesting battle imo.

Bruno for Shelvey would be my only change from the Everton game.

      (Quote)

  24. The defence is going to change, Targett can’t play so Manquillo should go in. But if Trippier hasn’t recovered then Manquillo plays on the right with Burn on the left assuming he has recovered, otherwise Dummett. Assuming everybody is fit, does Burn replace Schar?

      (Quote)

  25. I think the bookies have the relegation odds wrong. They have NUFC at 9/4 and Everton at 11/2. I think they are giving Super-Frank too much credit. In his 1st season at Chelsea he got them to 4th, which is actually the minimum requirement for Abramovich. I am surprised he survived to the next season. Previously, he had taken Derby from 6th to ermmm… 6th and that was with a helping hand from Chelsea in the form of Mason Mount. I just think the “Friends of Frank” in the media are just giving him too much credit when he hasnt earned it (yet). He could turn out to be a good manager but the jury is out.

Everton do not have a good squad and have plenty of injuries to key players. I am not just basing my view on Wed’s match. I look at the squad and an inexperienced Manager and think Everton are more likely to go down than us.

The favourites are still Norwich, Watford and Burnley though.

Watch out for Burnley Frankie-Boy! Dyche has a habit of putting runs together. On the other hand it could be their turn after dodging the bullet for years (like Sunderland).

  26. I watched SuperMac on Wraith and he seems to have a narrative stuck in his head about ASM and also about NUFC. He said ASM was just running sideways across the box with no regard for others. That is simply not true. Every time he touched the ball he had 3 Everton players on him and had few options. That was their plan, and he still wriggled out of it. He was also much more on the wing than I have seen him.

McDonald said about NUFC that we do not have any plan or create anything except from set pieces. Again, the goals may have come from set pieces, but we had 20 shots and 9 on target. I think he has it stuck in his head about the games where we were creating 2 or 3 chances a game. That is not how we are playing now!!! If anything, we were absolutely **** at set pieces until very recently.

  28. I am going to state it again. My prediction is that Graeme Jones leaves NUFC in the summer whether we stay in the PL or not. Eddie was just saying the “right” words when he praised him when he got the Manager’s job. You could not fail to see how **** Jones really is by what he did in the 3 games he picked/coached the teams.

    9 inches tall

    1-inch arms

An articulating mouth that you can move up and down to scream at teammates with when Trippier hits it through the gap in the wall that you set up.

I think the arms and legs do not articulate though, otherwise it would be totally like the real thing and could stamp his feet and pound the ground when the next error occurs.

  31. I do not get how the rest of the football world cannot see how **** Pickford is? All he is is a good shot stopper. His kicking is overrated. You just had to watch our game to see that!

Then he managed to cripple Van Dijk. He also tried to cripple another player this year. I forget the game, but it should have been a red and he didnt even get a foul. He punches when he should catch. He even took out his own player, that massive lad Brathwaite, when he made the wrong decision to punch. He stays on his line when he should come for the ball.

I think Pickford is the worst ‘keeper in the PL and he has some serious competition from Ex-Mags Krul and Frankenstein along with Fabianski.

Sitting there watching the game and a NUFC fan goes for a p!ss. Scouser comes over and says “do you need that chair mate?”

Me “yes” he’s only gone for a p!ss.

They will nick anything them Scousers. But seriously, they really are annoying.

  34. Just reading the article on St Max ambition & think it’s totally fair enough really – champions league and winning things could be possible with NUFC IF and it’s STILL A BIG IF we stay up this season.
I think we get the players in the summer to make that massive jump from relegation to top 6.

Max unquestionably plays for the shirt & the love of the Newcastle fans. I’m sure he has his boyhood club he dreamt of winning trophies with, but it could be possible with Newcastle as he’s only 24.

I was watching him at the end of the Everton game, lapping up the atmosphere & love from the fans and thinking – I wonder if Lingard or Dembele or Ekitike is watching this???.

If we can turn home games into a bit of a fortress, with atmospheres like that, then I’ve no doubt the top players who aren’t feeling the love at their current clubs will want to jump onto the NUFC train.

God survival is so important to how things go in the history of NUFC. We are on the cusp of something really great – and whilst relegation wouldn’t end it completely, it would be such a heartbreaking set back.

  35. Sharpy: I think we spend 150 mil minimum in the summer if we stay up. Some will cry FFP but that is not really an issue if you look at the sponsorship deals just signed by Barca and Real Madrid. I think the Saudis want us challenging for a CL place next year and we have enough in this squad that need replacing, but also a core we can keep.

All we would need to do is replace Longstaff, Ritchie, Gayle, Dummett, Fernandez, Darlow, Hayden and Krafth. We can keep the rest as 1st team or as squad players. But that is 8 that need replacing and at an average of 20 mil each that is 160 mil.

As you say, we need to stay up though.

  36. Mina out for 10 weeks, so basically the season. Add that to the rest of Everton’s injuries, inc Calvert-Lewin, and they are in deep trouble. We saw close up what their defense is like without Mina. 6 points from 45. I have a feeling they are going down, or at best are 17th despite what the “Friends of Frank” say. Do you trust Dele Alli to save them?

  37. The overseas PL TV rights just overtook domestic rights money for the 1st time. Domestic is 5 billion and overseas a bit more. That tells you that the Saudis will want to promote their country through the brand of NUFC, especially in a world cup year that is being held in their region. Most in the USA couldnt point to Qatar on a map and think of it all as the middle east so the Saudis will be just another one of those countries. Hell, most in the US would not know where Iraq or Afghanistan are, even though there have been US led wars there.

I reckon if we stay up it will be Aramco on our shirts and 200 mil spent!!! Maybe not Aramco, that would be a bit too open about what the Saudis are doing, so perhaps Saudi Telecom?

      (Quote)

  38. It is pretty pointless the Saudis doing sportswashing via NUFC if there is no visibility of their country for a worldwide audience who probably dont even know they own NUFC. We will have to see Aramco, or Saudi Airlines/Telecom on our shirts to promote the brand. I would not be surprised if we rename SJP. Barca are calling their ground the “Spotify Camp Nou” I think.

Antonio said that people have been forgiven for racism. I dont know, that is sort of changing the subject. When you try to say something is not so bad by saying something else is worse, I am not sure if I buy the logic. Of course, they are both wrong but there is a fkn video of him abusing his cat and there isnt one of him being racist (racism is not ONLY about black people!).

I think cruelty to animals is probably more easily understood than racism so is easier to condemn and get (rightly) worked up about. He has put a target on his back and whatever Moyes says or how many fines are sent to animal charities, I think the away fans will not “forgive” him.

I do believe in 2nd chances, I just dont think Zouma will get one.

      (Quote)

  44. There is not a person out there who will make me believe Zouma hasn’t done that before to his cats. They were laughing ffs . In what world is kicking, slapping across the head and throwing stuff at any animal funny, it’s inhumane and worse still carried out in front of his young child. A young child who caught the cat picked it up and put it on a plate for Dad to abuse further ! Any normal kid of that age would be really upset at seeing their beloved pet treated that way. I would of been in tears telling him to stop it had that been my Dad.

As for the racism comparisons, it really isn’t helpful in this instance. They are both terrible acts but it’s human on human. This is bullying and abusing a defenseless animal who has no way of asking for help, thank god his dozy brother put it online or he would likely continue to do it.
So glad they are now safe with the RSPCA, I only hope they do not get returned.

His life is a sh it show now, if the cats are returned he will only resent them for it. Best adopt them out and put a ban on owning animals on him.

What should his punishment be? I think this will be decided in the court of public opinion, no matter what Moyes thinks, and he will have to leave the PL in the summer.

I agree with Prem that the stupidity of the whole thing was compounded by them putting it on snapchat. They took it down, like it might go away 🙂 They are just total morons!!! Once on the internet, nothing goes away!!!

  50. Having worked as a manager in professional life, you build up a rapport. Your whole role is to get the best out of people, but sometimes, and I plead guilty, you become over protective, you want to help and guide when actually a short sharp shock is what is really needed.

” His actions were diabolical but he’s a really good lad ”
    Well that’s ok then.
As you were, nowt to see here .

    Definition of DIABOLICAL:

characteristic of the Devil, or so evil as to be suggestive of the Devil.

  52. If Moyes tries to defend this further, he will tie himself in knots and become part of it. This will be part of Dour Dave’s legacy if he continues. Best for Zouma to be on the sideline. Best for West Ham. Best for Moyes. Zouma cannot be rehabbed from this in the UK. He has to go somewhere else.

  53. This might be the 1st Super Bowl half time show I will watch. It is Snoop and Dr. Drey. Americans get offended if you say “hell” and not “heck”. Every song they have ever made has a lot of MFers in it.

I am not a big hip hop fan except for these 2, Grandmaster Flash, Beastie Boys, Tupac and a bit of Drake. Oldschool!

I really want them to swear and see if the network bleeps them out. I am sure there will be a 10 second delay for TV.

  54. You just have to look at one of the most famous songs – Gangster Party. It is full of misogyny, the F word, the N word, the B word, the MF word, drug references. I dont know how they can sanitize this for American TV, which is why I am going to watch it.

  55. I mean, racism is bad, Antonio, but what does that have to do with Zouma abusing his cat?

Romans had slaves, witches were burned at the stake, Afghan women are forced to wear burkas but it has nothing to do with Zouma kicking his cat. Neither does racism.

Kurt Zouma’s middle name is HAPPY. I bet he is not fcn happy right now or at the end of the season when West Ham sell him to some Chinese or Russian team.

  56. Yes, Hitler was worse than Kurt Happy Zouma. So to, The Yorkshire Ripper who I dont know if he was racist or not. What’s the word Prem for this type of argument that Antonio is making?
Straw Man? False Equivalency? Both? Another word?

  57. Oh man, now I will have to get out my big book of relative atrocities and what do they all mean. I have already tried to decide if being an atheist is right or wrong and if God exists this week. Now I have to weigh in on whether Stalin or Zouma were the better person. I am pretty sure Zouma is better as his cat is still alive and Stalin killed millions of people.

But, I am doing an “Antionio” there. Comparing apples and oranges. What Zouma did is objectively wrong no matter what Hitler or Stalin did or how much racism there is in the PL.

  58. Moyes should just be honest. He knows what Zouma did was wrong but he wants to play Zouma because they are pushing for top 4 and Zouma’s ability on the pitch is critical to the teams chances of winning games.

The ambition of the club outweighs their moral values.

I don’t think Zouma needs to be hung, drawn and quartered and I hope he learns to be a better person from this – but the chances of that happening are slim if the people involved in his circles such as his employers do not publicly condemn his behaviour and dish out a meaningful consequence.

He cares about playing football and that should be taken away from him temporarily. A 2 week fine means nothing to him.

  61. I’ve said this on twitter, I want Sunderland back up the league’s now. We have had our laugh and probably always will from now on regardless of what league they are in, so let’s support the club’s neighbours so we can have the Derby back.

  62. Was watching Mick Lowes on Wraith and had to turn him off. I cannot believe that someone in football so long can be such an idiot. He is complaining that we got our goals against Everton from set pieces and not open play. How long have we complained that NUFC DO NOT score from set pieces, Mick? There was a stat that we went like 2 years not scoring from a corner. I have said many times that Shelvey should never take a set piece again because he floats his corners in and his direct free kicks end up in the stands and never trouble the goal keeper. His goal against Leeds he admitted was a mish!t.

We were pretty unlucky not to score from open play. Murphy hit the post and the Mackem T-Rex made a good save from ASM with his feet.

But, now we have players who can actually take set pieces – Trips and Fraser and Mick Lowes is complaining!!! About 30% of goals come from set pieces. We are just trying to get back to the league average.
