Former EPL referee reveals why penalty wasn’t given vs Chelsea & how VAR got it wrong – Video

Former Premier League referee has been speaking on Sky Sports News this morning about THAT decision to deny Newcastle United a clear penalty during yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.

According to his information, the matchday officials felt that Jacob Murphy went down too easily – suggesting the fall was exaggerated in an attempt to win a foul.

However, Gallagher has pointed out exactly why VAR should have asked the referee, David Coote, to take another look at the incident on the pitch-side monitor.

Why? Because Coote gave a corner, yet replays show that Trevoh Chalboah did NOT touch the ball.

As a result, Gallagher feels those at Stockley Park made a mistake not asking the referee to take another look – and, had they done so, he feels confident a spot kick would’ve been given.

Here’s what he had to say when speaking on Sky Sports News this morning, with Gallagher, Sue Smith and Stephen Warnock all believing it was a stone-wall penalty:

A hugely frustrating error from VAR, who not only missed a clear and obvious penalty but also failed to punish Kai Havertz – the scorer of Chelsea’s goal – for an extremely high elbow on Dan Burn.

I’m confident it won’t cost us, as we anything but a side heading for relegation under Howe, yet that hasn’t taken away the sheer frustration following a performance that deserved so much more.

  2. No matter how “easily he went down” Chellobah has got hold of his shirt and is pulling him back as well as missing the ball and and making contact with Murphy while attempting a tackle. Anywhere else on the pitch it’s a foul and a booking.so how is it not a penalty ? We can understand the Ref getting it wrong in real time but how can VAR not see that it’s a penalty. Whoever was in the VAR studio should be sacked, he clearly doesn’t know his @rse from his elbow and don’t get me started on elbows, especially those belonging to Kai Havertz ???

  3. Why leave it to somebody sitting miles away to decicde what has happened? How long would it take for the on-pitch referee to jog over to the pitch-side monitor and look for himself? We don’t need an additional (incompetent) referee to look at it. Leave it to the referee. All VAR needs to do is put the recordings up for the referee to see for himself. It must be frustrating for the ref when he looks at the replay after the game and see that the decision was wrong. And how many points is an apology for getting it wrong worth in the league table??
