Newcastle 1-0 Wolves: Wood off the mark at St James’ Park as Toon secure huge win

A well deserved win for Newcastle United and first goal at St James’ Park for Chris Wood, who scored a second half penalty to seal a 1-0 victory over Wolves on Friday night.

The result ends our run of three-straight defeats, sending us up to 14th, just three points away from the top half and 10 clear of the bottom three ahead of upcoming games against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Norwich.

We were comfortably the better side in the opening 45 minutes, catching them on the ball high up the pitch, enjoying more possession and having a Wood ‘goal’ disallowed after Guimaraes was ruled offside, but we didn’t do enough in the final third to punish an off the boil Wolves side who looked there for the taking early on.

Thankfully, we defended well in the second half as Wolves threw more at us and found that all important break through in the 72nd minute, with Wood bagging his first goal at St James’ Park from the spot after being brought down by Sa.

Bruno Guimaraes was the best player on the pitch and deserved to be on the winning side more than any other player in a black and white shirt tonight, showing his composure, class and all-round awareness in an all-action performance in the middle of the park.

Eddie Howe made two changes from the side that lost heavily last weekend, seeing Bruno Guimaraes and Emil Krafth replace Joe Willock and Javier Manquillo – meaning our £35m Brazilian made his first start since sealing a January move from Lyon.

STARTING 11: Dubravka – Krafth, Schar, Burn, Targett – Guimaraes, Shelvey (c), Joelinton – Fraser, Wood, Saint-Maximin.

SUBS: Darlow, Dummett, Lascelles, Manquillo, Ritchie, Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron, Gayle.

The crowd were in good voice under the lights at St James’ Park and the players also looked up for it from the off, passing the ball around confidentially in the early stages and pressing well as Wolves looked happy to sit deep and hit on the counter.

Sadly, we were dealt a cruel blow on the 10-minute mark, as Ryan Fraser was forced early after pulling his hamstring. He tried to continue but was soon replaced by Miguel Almiron – and looked visibly devastated to have suffered what looks like an injury that’ll keep him out for at least a few weeks.

Wolves were barely getting out their own half, so the emphasis was on us to move the ball quickly and break them down. We were comfortably the better side as we reached the 20-minute mark and had our first real sight of goal when Almiron latched on to a clever ball in behind from Schar, but the Paraguayan couldn’t keep his shot down.

That was the one criticism midway through the first half. We’d enjoyed 62% possession but hadn’t managed an effort on target for all our positive approach play.

Image

That changed when a brilliant flick from Almiron got put Guimaraes in down the right. He then fired a ball across the box, Wolves failed to clear and Wood poked home. The crowd went wild and the big Kiwi thought he’d bagged his first goal at St James’ Park, yet VAR replays showed Bruno was in an offside position and the goal was disallowed.

That was a wake-up call for Wolves. They’d started pretty awfully – giving the ball away in an awful position for Wood’s ‘goal’ and sitting very deep – so were ordered to push up by Bruno Lage in a bid to impose themselves on the game. But that didn’t last long as they soon reverted to being camped in their own half.

A lovely one-two between Joelinton and Targett got the big man in down the left just before the 40-minute mark, however the Brazilian’s cross was well cut out and Wolves cleared.

Shelvey then released Almiron down the right with a lovely ball around the corner, but Miggy’s left-footed effort was blocked after he cut inside. Another half chance that wasn’t fully capitalised on came just before the break, as Schar took the free-kick he did well to win but struck the wall.

It was a solid first half where we’d completely controlled the game, enjoying more of the ball, robbing the visitors of possession high up the pitch and barely allowing Wolves anyone near Dubravka’s goal. However, our lack of cutting edge in the final third, poor decision making and limited movement had to improve heading into the final 45 minutes, with us failing to register a single shot on target so far.

Guimaraes stood out a millions miles at times with his work on and off the ball, but Shelvey and Joelinton needed to offer a little bit more. Dare I say it, we were missing Joe Willock’s driving runs and late arrival into the box; something that could’ve also created space for the tightly-marked Allan Saint-Maximin.

Wolves had clearly been given a good talking to at half-time and came out with more attacking intent. Forcing their first corner of the game soon after the restart.

Our first shot on target then arrived five minutes later as Wood flicked on a long ball into Dan Burn’s path. The Geordie giant took it first time and did well to keep his effort down, but it was too close to Jose Sa and comfortably saved.

That chance aside, we’d come out slowly and were second best in the early stages. We weren’t controlling the game like we had done in the first 45 and almost went 1-0 down after an erratic piece of defending from Fabian Schar helped Hwang get in down the left.

Thankfully, the South Korean’s shot was well blocked by Krafth, but Schar was caught out again moments later, receiving the first yellow card of the game after bringing down Fabio Silva cynically.

We needed to wake up, with another warning sign arriving just before the hour mark when Moutinho flashed a wicked ball across the box after Almiron lost flight of a diagonal pass down Wolves’ left.

Frustrations then grew a few minutes later, as Allan Saint-Maximin overhit a simple pass just moments after blazing over the bar, but the crowd soon belted out “who’s that team we call united” to give the players a much needed boost with half an hour to play.

Our next opening saw Bruno Guimaraes find himself in space down the right with plenty to pick out in the box. His ball across goal fell to Saint-Maximin, however the Frenchman’s finish was erratic once again, seeing him blast way over to leave heads in hands at the Gallowgate.

ASM then got in behind himself after beating the offside trap, but his cross-come-shot evaded Chris Wood. Another moment we failed to capitalise on, yet we were handed a huge chance to take the lead when a quick counter-attack saw Joelinton put Wood clean through – only for the former Burnley man to be brought down in the box by Sa!

Penalty to Newcastle and a chance Wood was NOT going to pass up after having one chalked off early in the game, as he sent Sa the wrong way to score his first goal at St James’ Park in front of the Gallowgate! 1-0 Newcastle.

It was almost 2-0 moments later when some lovely hold up play from Wood released Saint-Maximin down the left. Maxi cut inside, got his head up and shifted it to Bruno inside the box, but the Brazilian’s shot deflected just wide of the far post.

St James’ Park was rocking and there was a genuine feeling around the ground that this was our chance to all but secure our Premier League status, knowing a win here would send us 10 clear of the bottom three.

However, with Wolves still pursuing Europe and a win away from the top six, they came back at us in the final 15 minutes, starting with a Fabio Silva header that the young striker should’ve done much better with.

Silva then mustered up a much better effort seconds later, this time forcing Dubravka into a brilliant near post save that the Slovakian did well to get down to before a tame effort from Jonny was hit straight at the NUFC stopper from range.

Bruno Guimaraes – who had been comfortably the best player on the pitch – then went off to a standing ovation just before four minutes of stoppage time was signalled, seeing Sean Longstaff come on in his place.

After a Saint-Maximin break away saw him fire a low shot at Sa, Dubravka then came up trumps again by collecting a high ball into the box with little over 60 seconds left to play.

Jacob Murphy then came on for the Frenchman in the final moments of the match and the full-time whistle followed, signalling another huge win at St James’ Park for Newcastle United. – sending us 10 clear of the drop zone and the whole of St James’ Park home happy!

Next up, a meeting with Leicester City next Sunday.

Get in! HWTL.

  1. Some good performances. Krafth. Dubs made a great save to keep the Wolves at bay.

  2. I thought Shelvey did quite well also. He was always so inconsistent under Bruce. He has a really quick footballing mind, you just have to get it out of him.

  3. Does Super-Frank come under any pressure if Everton lose? Their last results have been:

    LLLWLL

The win was a fluke against us.

  4. Frankie’s pundit pals will no doubt stick up for him. I have no idea if Man U will turn up though. You would think they have a chance with Fernandez and Ronaldo? And De Gea. The rest of their team are sort of average considering what they spent on them, but still better than Everton. Pogba is good on his day. It would be good for them though is if his day was more than 1 in 5.

  5. I know, I know… I am talking about Everton too much for a NUFC blog. I just want them to go down because of their fans’ attitude to NUFC over the last couple of years.

  6. Ya Knaa – I watched the game again and, I thought we outplayed Wolves in the 1st half and then for all but the 1st 10 mins of the 2nd. They had won 3 of their last 4 before us and would have gone ahead of the $1 Billion squad Man U and the team that everybody loves to love WEST HAM if they had beat us. They could have gone 5th.

  7. I dont know what game some of our miserable fans thought they were watching, but here are the stats:

NUFC 12 shots, 4 on target (inc disallowed goal).

Wolves 5 shots, 2 on target.

They are 2 of the poorest teams in the league right now & I expect it to be a horrible game to watch.

Kim – they brought Ali & VDB in and yet their midfield against Burnley –

    Doucoure
    HOLGATE
    IWOBI

If Ali and VDB can’t get in ahead of those last 2 – wow, we dodged 2 bullets there!!.

Everton can’t buy a goal at the moment & they have Richarlison & DCL – 2 of the best young strikers in the league. The players around them create very few chances for them & you’d think Ali and/or Beek would be the first names on the team sheet to supply those strikers.

Frank is out of his depth there & was never the man to battle relegation.

  12. Anyway, I want to go back to NUFC.

I love that we are making SJP a fortress. The atmosphere & fans are sensational & seeing the flags – hairs on the back of your neck stuff man!!.

The players definitely feed off it and their performances are so clearly better at home – and I put that down to the fans.
Pundits in the past have claimed the pressure of the fans suppressed the players – Howe has made sure the players understand they are there to feed off.

It’s clear Bruno feeds off it & I think it will be a big reason players will want to come to NUFC next season.

I’m so pleased with the reaction from the players after that Spurs 2nd half. Brilliant job from Howe!!. His management of them between the 2 games was critical, with fans and pundits like fat Sam having a pop. He’s kept them together & got the performance out of them – the win was a bonus.

  13. I’ll take it but I didn’t think that was a pen. The ball had hit the boards before Sa touched Wood.. Wood had totally lost control . . .
Never mind – Bruno is a great signing. Class all round.

I had a paper round to pay for my tickets and a schoolteacher and his wife took me there because me Mam said I was too young to go alone.

It was great to hear everybody up for it. Including the owners who seem to be really happy when we score.

Big Fat Sam can fck off!!!

Massive result, solid team performance and for me special praise for both Krafth and Miggy, who both took their chances.

Bruno seems like he can do everything and he did some decent link up play with Miggy.

Shelvey, he’s like watching a tank turn – so slow – but wow he can stick in a through ball with laser like precision.

Targett solid yet again. I hope the option to buy is locked in and Villa can’t pull out of the deal, because for me he is better than their left back.

Sham – totally agree mate, including the praise for Olly ??.

I was well impressed with the link up between Miggy & Bruno – that could certainly develop depending on how long Fraser is out.

Maxi was a concern though. I think it’s unfair to say he’s a one trick pony – but teams have certainly figured him out & he’s taken to hitting the deck and looking for fouls.
He didn’t track back at all yesterday & left Targett exposed a few times – though he coped well with it, but still Maxi should be doing that work too.

His counter attack play on a few occasions was excellent – particularly the goal. But he needs to look up & pass the ball off. There was a few times last night we lost the ball because of his poor decision making.

Look the lad has been brilliant for us. He’s carried us on occasions. I want him as part of our big rebuild – but he needs to clock in.

He talks about success & winning trophies & individual awards – he’s capable, but he has to improve & keep learning.

He’s loved by the fans, but he can’t ride that wave forever. Bruno will take some of that & big names will come in the summer – he has to kick on.

Kim – makes no odds to us man, we are no longer part of that relegation battle. It was a big dent in Man Utd getting 4th though so couldn’t be happier ??‍♂️.

Burnley play Norwich this weekend so that Everton win piles the pressure on them now – and Dyche saying Everton don’t know how to win could bite him now.

  28. I really hope Howe uses our final games to play Bruno & Almiron.

They linked up well last night and I’d be interested to see if that was a one off or if it be developed.

Howe has improved so many players since coming in – could he now do it with Miggy as well ???.

      (Quote)

  29. If we can repeat that performance against Leicester and Palace, I think we can win at least 1 of those 2 fixtures. Then it’s Norwich away – we have to be winning that if we are serious about improving into next season.
We then have a few games I expect nowt from until the Burnley game – I want 3 from that one as well. That’s 9 I’m after by the end of the season – I’ll settle for 6 or 7. Less than that would be disappointing, but I actually think we probably only need 2 or 3 to guarantee safety.

      (Quote)

  30. Am I getting carried away here looking at catching the teams above us – Saints, Villa & Brighton???
I know we’ve got some tough fixtures ahead but they aren’t playing great at the moment.

I’m looking at them rather than the teams below now – but the Leicester game could change that like ??‍♂️. Win and we are definitely with those teams – lose & I still don’t think we are relegation battling, I just don’t think we finish higher than we are now.

  34. Re: Maxi.

He spoke of winning individual awards not long ago. He needs to get his head up, assess options and pick the right option rather than going for glory. He has superb raw ability but he needs that extra element of he is going to join the truly elite players.

That said, he is a luxury player and whilst it is frustrating watching him give the ball away needlessly and open us up to attack, he has little around him up front in terms of attacking ability to lay the ball off to.

Once we get a few more attackers with more ability, the balance will even out and teams will find it very difficult to stick 3 players on him because they will also have other quality players to take into account.

There is no doubt we should be keeping him as a starter in my opinion. He can grow with the team. It’s just difficult right now given the lack of depth our squad has in most departments.

In the summer, I’d like to see a seasoned quality striker come in who is mobile and has a proven fitness record. Would have no issues with Wilson as a quality option off the bench and Wood as a different tactical option.

Miggy might have a chance to show he can be a capable squad player between now and end of the season. As much I like Fraser’s work ethic, he does not have enough end product for me. Not as a starter anyway. Would it be possible for us to snare Coutinho in the summer given our Brazilian players already at the Toon? I’m not sure what the buy option is for Villa. One of Murphy/Miggy probably has to leave , with the other as a back up option on one wing with Fraser the back up on the other.

Willock can compete with a new signing for that AM spot.

CM we have Shelvey, Bruno, Joelinton and there is talk of the likes of Phillips being bid for. Having Phillips and Bruno in the middle with the other 2 as the back up options is very exciting.

Targett has to be signed at LB. manquillo could be his deputy for time being. I’m warming to the idea of Krafth staying for now as understudy to Tripper. Then we would have Lascelles and Schaar as back up to Burn and a mobile, passing CB to come in.

We need somebody to come in to compete with Dubz, probably a starter with better distribution.

    So for me:

In – Striker, wide attacker, central attacking midfielder, midfielder, CB and GK. 6 quality players in.

Out – Gayle, one of Miggy/Murphy, Hayden, Hendrick, Dummett, Fed, Darlow or Woodman (one to stay as 3rd choice). Anyone else I’ve not mentioned can probably leave.

That gives us a team capable of challenging between 5th and 8th

  40. I also dont get this narrative on some parts of the internet that if we could get 50 mil for Maxi we should sell him in the summer. This is not Mike Ashley’s Newcastle United! We are no longer being run like one of his Tat Shops. We dont need the money! We are no longer buying players for their sell-on value with Chris Wood being the best example but also BDB. Both on 2 1/2 year deals.

I saw signs against Wolves of St Max playing a few more short balls and quick passes. I say give Eddie Howe another 6 months with him and get a 60 million pound striker and other teams will not be able to mark him out of the game with 3 players on him every time he touches the ball.

Is he a luxury player as some suggest? Perhaps. But so were Ginola and Laurent Robert and Keegan and Sir Bobby still kept them and played them.

      (Quote)

  41. Eric, Ginola and Robert had a more consistent end product though. Admittedly they didn’t do much defensive work either.
He has undoubted talent but frustrates me so much trying to do it all alone. Perhaps he’s feels it’s a waste of time trying to pass given our poor return in front of goal but he was the same when Wilson was up front too and we can’t say Wilson fluffed any chances .
Hopefully Eddie can bring out the best in him and we end up with a player as good as Ginola was.

    Shelvey Bruno Joelinton

    Miggy Wood ASM

If we want Darwin Nunez, I think we can outbid even Man U. It’s a matter of whether he will come.

Journos, pundits and even NUFC fans are looking at this like it is a 5 year “project”. I see it as the Saudis want to win as soon as possible and usurp one of the top PL teams. Arsenal or Man U, most likely. WHY WOULD THEY HAVE BOUGHT US OTHERWISE!?

When I see journos saying we will spend 60 mil in the summer, I say get a clue FFS. That is just BS from our owners. We will be the biggest spenders in Europe in the summer. It might not be the headline transfer number but we will recruit a couple of free agents/Bosmans.

  53. Olly thinks I am cynical about THE PLEDGE. I am!!! I see ulterior motives from NUST wanting to boost their own subscriber list when they knew there was no chance of this working. You have to have been naive or stupid to have bought into this scheme. I will be nice and say that most were naive.

  54. Lots of talk that the Targett deal is agreed and done – hope so. I really rate the lad. Yes he had a poor sencond half against Spurs but he wasn’t alone.

He’s the type of player who is happy to do the ugly stuff and leave the attackers to do their thing. He can still deliver a good cross or hit a decent dead ball – but he’s generally a solid 7/10 defender and well worth £15m imo.

  55. I predict that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF the PREDICORS will say a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Including Olly! But Lawro, Merse and Owen will all go 1-1. Tell me different after they do it!!!!

  56. I think it will be 2-1 NUFC.

On Wraith’s show today I bet he will go 1-1 along with Malcolm McDonald and John Gibson.

So that is 7 predictors going for 1-1 inc Olly. I bet I am right on 5 out of 7!!!!!

  57. The odds of a 1-1 draw in the PL is 13% but I bet you 5 out of the 7 pundits (inc Olly) I mentioned say that will be the score on Sunday.
