Forgotten loanee returns to NUFC with new deal and winners medal – One to watch this summer?

Over the past few months, Elliot Anderson has stolen the headlines thanks to a series of stunning displays in League Two, with Matty Longstaff also catching the eye via six goals in 16 appearances for Mansfield.

However, there’s been another Newcastle United youngster who has been impressing in the league above both – and that’s Kell Watts.

After joining Wigan Athletic on loan last summer, his performances over the first half of the 2021/22 season left Eddie Howe ‘impressed’, and saw him rewarded with a new two-year-old deal in February.

Since then, the local lad has gone on to play a key role in Wigan’s promotion back to the Championship, playing 35 times in all competitions in a season that’s seen the Latics finish top of the pile on 92 points.

He still needs to fill out, and it must be said that he is no longer a young lad at 22, but he’s left-footed, stands 6ft 3′ and appears ready to impress Eddie Howe when he returns for pre-season this summer.

Here’s what he told NUFC.co.uk after signing a new deal at the club earlier this year:

“I’m absolutely delighted.

I’ve been at the club since I was eight so I am buzzing to get a new contract.

All my family are thrilled and I can’t wait to be working with the new manager next season.”

Along with Elliot Anderson, the Alnwick-born centre-back could be one to watch over this summer’s pre-season programme.
