Sky Sports: Medical ‘today’ as NUFC close in on double deal involving bargain move for Matt Targett

The positive news just keeps on coming at Newcastle United, with Sky Sports confirming that Matt Targett looks set to become the club’s first senior signing of the summer.

As revealed by Pete Graves and Keith Downie, the club are now ‘pushing ahead’ with a permanent move for the Aston Villa loanee, believing he’ll have his medical ‘today’ and sign in the ‘coming days’ for a bargain fee of £12m.

The left-back barely put a foot wrong during his loan spell at St James’ Park over the second half of the 2021/22 season and admitted in our final home game that he was keen to extend his stay on Tyneside.

Elsewhere, Sky Sports also state that we’ve held “further positive talks” with the representatives of Reims striker Hugo Ekitike.

Graves states that the player’s agents were given permission to speak to Newcastle over a potential €30m move that could see him sign a five-year-deal at the club, suggesting this move is also edging closer.

Here’s what he’s had to say on both deals:

Pete Graves on Matt Targett:

‘Newcastle pushing ahead with Matt Targett permanent deal from Aston Villa.

‘Targett enjoyed hugely successful loan on Tyneside and impressed Eddie Howe and the clubs owners.

‘Deal in place to make move permanent for just £12m and expected to do so in the coming days. Medical today.’

Pete Graves on Hugo Ekitike:

The reps of Hugo Ekitike have held “further positive talks” with Newcastle United.

Sky Sports News told agents were given permission to speak to NUFC as clubs continue to finalise deal.

Fee of €30m under discussion, also personal terms over 5 year contract.

  1. It’s as obvious a signing as Dubravka imo.

Targett was brilliant for us last season & is a snip at that price.

It’ll be great to have him in our team permanently.
