Newcastle United have completed the signing of Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett on a permanent deal.
The club have announced that the 26-year-old has signed a four-year deal at St James’ Park, with official confirmation coming after the defender was spotted on Tyneside earlier today to undergo a medical.
Although no fee is mentioned in the club’s official statement, it’s believed to have cost £12m to turn his loan move into a permanent one, with Sky Sports suggesting that a £3m fee was paid back in January to have him for the second half of the 2021/22 season.
Here’s the announcement videos released by NUFC’s media team following his arrival, along with reactions to the news from Targett himself and Eddie Howe:
Matt Targett:
“I’m absolutely delighted to sign a four-year contract with this club,” said Targett.
“For me, it was an easy decision to make the loan permanent after the welcome I had from my fellow players, the staff, the supporters and the owners so I’m really happy to be here.”
Eddie Howe:
“Matt had a fantastic impact after joining on loan in January and made a big contribution to some excellent team performances.
“He is a great lad and a top professional who undoubtedly makes us stronger so I’m delighted he sees his future here.”
