Newcastle identify new No1 transfer target as Howe’s James Maddison hopes fade – Report

As reported by The Sun, Newcastle have now made Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher as our new ‘number one target’ following multiple failed attempts to sign James Maddison.

The player has been linked with a potential loan move to Tyneside over the past week, however we’re now attempting to persuade the Blues to sell for around £40m-rated midfielder.

After an impressive loan spell with Crystal Palace – where he scored eight in 34 – Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was keen to take a look at the 22-year-old to try and fit him into his talented his squad.

However, the German manager has since admitted that the talented the youngster won’t be guaranteed his desired playing time and that, for the right price, the club could be convinced to let him go.

On Gallagher, Tuchel said: “In general, nobody is for sale, and everybody is for sale. It depends on what the player wants, how bad the player wants it, what we think, who is ready to pay a certain amount of money. Then maybe everybody is for sale.”

It’s claimed we have now turned our attention to the Epsom-born midfielder after two offers, valued at around £40-45m, were rejected for Leicester’s James Maddison.

The report states that Howe is still eager to bring the Foxes star to St James’ Park, but our hopes of landing the 25-year-old are now being described as ‘slim.’

After Jonjo Shelvey sustained a hamstring injury, likely to keep him out for half of the season, the squad is looking particularly thin in the midfield and could desperately use the energy and excitement that the young star could bring.
