Guardiola on Saudi approach, Howe, 5 Newcastle players & Toon fans ahead of trip to Tyneside

Prior to our clash against the champions on Sunday, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes our cautious approach to transfers is because Newcastle “want to be sustainable for many years.”

The Spaniard wasn’t being drawn into discussing how Man City are operating on the transfer front, but when asked about Newcastle, praised our January window for bringing in quality players who allowed us to “set up perfectly.”

Pep also praised the brilliant job Eddie Howe has done on Tyneside, stating he “always makes a real competitive team” and that the numbers “speak for themselves” since he came in.

Guardiola then name-checked Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier as players who can cause problems, also praising the “incredible” atmosphere at St James’ Park ahead of Sunday’s game – which he believes will be a “good test” for his Man City players.

Here’s a few videos on his comments today, starting with his comments on Eddie Howe:

“I think what they have done, Newcastle, is because they believe is the best. For example in the last winter transfer they made a lot because they were in a bit of trouble and look how it benefitted them.

“Dan Burn, Targett, Bruno Guimaraes and the players they bought set up perfectly. That’s why they get the results. What are they going to do? Honestly I don’t know.”

There’s still a long long way to go for Howe to improve the squad to a point where we can dream of competing with the likes of City, but for now, most fans are hoping for an improved performance on last season’s 5-0 and 4-0 batterings!
