“Newcastle were obsessed” – Fabrizio Romano reveals NUFC loan bid that was blocked this summer

Speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed how Newcastle were ‘obsessed’ with Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic in the summer, but our loan offer was rejected by the Blues.

Newcastle seemed very keen to improve upon our current crop of wingers, with the likes of Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby and Leeds’ Jack Harrison heavily linked throughout the window alongside Pulisic.

However, with the majority of funds being spent on record signing Alexander Isak – around £60m – Newcastle turned to the loan market, with the USMNT captain listed as a priority.

Chelsea were unwilling to let their £57.5m man leave on a loan deal – unless it included an obligation to buy – preferring a permanent move if they were to depart with the 24-year-old.

On Pulisic, Romano said: “Newcastle were obsessed with Christian Pulisic. They wanted him, but they wanted him on loan and not on a permanent deal. They wanted him on loan, maybe with a buy option, not mandatory. And this is why Chelsea decided to say no.”

So far this season, the ex-Dortmund man has featured in Chelsea’s starting 11 just once in eight games while Newcastle have severely lacked quality and creativity down the right-flank.

With just two years left on his contract, there may be a chance that Newcastle return with another offer for the out-of-favour winger in the next couple of windows.
