Howe issues injury update on Isak, Saint-Maximin, Joelinton & Shelvey ahead of Brentford clash

Speaking at this morning’s press conference, Eddie Howe has offered an injury update ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Brentford at St James’ Park.

Starting with some good news, Allan Saint-Maximin (hamstring) and Joelinton (knee) are in contention to return after both took part in training this week.

Howe insists that ASM is in a “good place” and could make his first appearance in almost six weeks, although Alexander Isak will miss out once again with a thigh injury.

The boss states that the Swedish star is “running on grass” and “won’t be too long”, but it seems the medical team want to ease him back in, meaning he’ll be forced to sit this one out.

In other news, an “ahead of schedule” Jonjo Shelvey will train today for the first time since suffering a serious hamstring injury in July, suggesting he WILL return to action before the World Cup break.

Here’s what Howe told the press when asked for an injury update just moments ago:

So, a relatively positive fitness update from Howe, with two key players back for tomorrow, Shelvey making great progress and Isak stepping up his recovery from a recent knock that doesn’t sound anything too serious.
