Premier League star named NUFC’s top January target as Howe eyes two signings – The Telegraph

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle have made Leicester City’s James Maddison a ‘priority target’ ahead of the January transfer window.

North-East reporter Luke Edwards reports that, after breaking our transfer record twice under the new owners, we plan to be ‘active again’ in the new year.

It’s believed Eddie Howe is eager to bring in attacking reinforcements, with a right-winger and central midfielder top of his list.

Maddison, however, appears to be the big signing we’re pushing to secure, being aware of the fact he’ll have just 18 months remaining on his contract if he fails to sign a new deal over the coming months.

After having two summer bids – the second worth an alleged £40-45m – rejected already, it seems we’ll look to make it third time lucky in January; although we may face greater competition if his early season form is anything to go by.

The Foxes star has kicked off the campaign with five goals and two assists in seven league appearances so far, with him scintillating display in Monday’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest leaving many in the media calling for an England call-up.

If he’s open to the move – as The Telegraph reported over the summer – and Leicester would reluctantly sell for the right price should he refuse a new deal, the dream signing many are hoping for might just have legs.
