Howe talks £40m ‘bargain’, Toon performance, Newcastle fans and Miguel Almiron after 5-1 win

Following Newcastle’s 5-1 hammering of Brentford, Eddie Howe was full of praise for the ‘outstanding’ Bruno Guimaraes after his latest man-of-the-match performance and thanked fans for ‘incredible atmosphere’.

The Brazilian scored twice for the Magpies, but Howe believes his second – a terrific drive and shot from outside of the box – was a ‘key moment’ after conceding a penalty just moments before.

Prior to kick off, Wor Flags revealed a new display in the Gallowgate with images and quotes from the confirmation of our takeover as a tribute to the anniversary of the day the news was made official.

Howe was grateful to supporters for creating such an incredible atmosphere from kick off and made sure that his players responded to it.

Despite a ‘slow start’ to the game, Howe claimed he was ‘very pleased’ with our ability to maintain our intensity and high press and force Brentford into making mistakes which we were able to capitalise on.

One goal which came as a result from our high intensity was scored by the in-form Miguel Almiron who Howe believes has played ‘brilliantly’ in recent weeks and is happy to see him finally adding goals to his game.

Here’s what he’s had to say on all of the above, starting with his comments on our two-goal hero, Bruno Guimaraes.

Howe on Bruno:

“I would say that he’s a bargain in today’s current climate.

“He’s absolutely a bargain because he’s had a huge effect on the team and the club. In today’s market, that is a relatively modest sum – which I can’t really believe I’m saying – but it is.

“It’s not just the player, but the person as well. He’s a pleasure to coach, pleasure to be around. He was outstanding. We really missed him when he was out. Quality player who helps us in every phase.

“He’s a really positive person. He’s an energiser, someone I love to coach and be with. Everyone connected with the club, me the players the supporters, absolutely love him.

“He’s top quality, in every aspect.”

Howe on the SJP atmosphere:

“What an incredible atmosphere created by everyone connected with the club today. It was a brilliant place to play football. Thankfully, the players responded to that.”

Howe on the performance:

“We were pleased with today, today was a tough game and we knew Brentford would make it very difficult for us.

“We had a bit of a slow start to the game, responded to that with the first goal and I think that changed the complexion of the game from our perspective. We managed to maintain our intensity throughout the game so I’m very pleased.”

Howe on Almiron:

“It’s all about building consistency to his game, but he has performed brilliantly off the ball and now he’s adding goals to that.”
