Dan Burn’s telling response live on talkSPORT when asked for Newcastle’s 2022/23 target

In an interview with talkSPORT, Newcastle defender Dan Burn believes finishing “comfortably” in the top 10 would show real progression this season, believing it’s important we don’t get carried away too soon after breaking into those European slots.

The 30-year-old admitted that, as a Newcastle fan himself, he understands how supporters can ‘get excited’ after a string of good results but wants to stay focused and not ‘get ahead of ourselves’.

With the Magpies currently in sixth place having already played two of the Premier League heavyweights and losing just once, there is certainly a case to be made for us to make a potential European push.

If there is more investment from our owners in January – and we are in a similar position as we are in right now heading into the window – the talent in the squad, feel-good factor around the club and tactical nous of Eddie Howe would give us every chance, but we need to take it one step at a time when it comes to our expectations.

Although it’s not entirely unrealistic to suggest we could finish in the top seven, it’s good to hear that the players are staying grounded and focused on steady progression – something we haven’t seen in a long long time.
