Club officials set for talks with Toon fans over controversial St James’ Park proposal – The Times

According to The Times, Newcastle United officials are set to meet with fans to discuss the potential renaming of St James’ Park; a move that could massively increase the club’s commercial revenue.

The idea is that the stadium – which has been named St James’ Park since it was opened in 1892 – would keep its name but would be followed by a sponsor which would increase our income and allow us to push back the restrictions of FFP.

This proposal comes after reports of the appointment of Peter Silverstone as chief commercial officer who will be given the task to increase funds at the club.

Those at the top believe this decision to be ‘contentious’ enough that they are wanting to meet with fans and gauge the overall opinion on the idea before following through with it.

This is not the first time this idea has been put forward – in 2011 Mike Ashley opted to change the name to Sports Direct Arena, meaning the club received no extra income and the decision was inevitably met with fury.

After 14 years of no communication from Ashley, the concept of factoring in fans opinions when making a big decision is a breath of fresh air and, although some may disagree with the proposal, is certainly a step in the right direction.
