Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace (3-2 on pens): Pope heroics send Toon through

Nick Pope was the unlikely hero at St James’ Park tonight, making three saves in a penalty shootout to send Newcastle into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at Crystal Palace’s expense.

It was a disjointed display on the night that kasyno online blik sites couldn’t predict, with us struggling to create chances, press high or play out from the back, but another welcomed result as Eddie Howe’s Mags march on to the last 16.

After eight changes saw the likes of Anderson, Manquillo, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin and Lascelles all start, a flat first half display pushed Howe to bring on five of his regular 11, seeing Bruno, Botman, Trippier, Almiron and Willock all feature in the second 45.

It was a nervous start from Newcastle who suffered a few sloppy moments in possession, but the Eagles were unable to capitalise and struggled to create any clear-cut chances themselves.

Approaching the 15-minute mark, the Magpies started to see a bit more of the ball, yet still failed to create anything of note as Palace looked comfortable in a game sorely lacking in quality or spark.

We had to wait until the 21st minute to see the first chance of the game – Jean-Philppe Mateta found himself in space down the left-hand side, but his strike was saved well by Pope who was able to put it out for a corner.

Newcastle’s first chance came at the half-hour mark when Sean Longstaff fizzed a ball into Elliott Anderson, who took a great first touch before turning his defender and registering the first shot on target for the Mags. It was more like it, but a weak effort that was easily collected by Sam Johnstone.

We started the second-half with back-to-back chances created by Allan Saint-Maximin, who looked the most likely to create something from nothing despite being well below his dazzling best. First, the Frenchman played a beautiful ball to Anderson, who saw his back post header deflect away for a corner. Moments later, ASM’s delivery found an unmarked Dan Burn, only for his downward header to go straight at Johnstone from six yards out.

Eddie Howe then made perhaps the most impressive triple change we’ve had the luxury of making in recent times, as Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and Bruno Guimaraes replaces Javier Manquillo, Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff to inject some fresh legs and quality into the team. Miguel Almiron then replaced Elliot Anderson soon after, spurning our biggest chance of the second half after latching onto Trippier’s lovely through ball.

We were seeing more of the ball at this point, but never truly looked like scoring against an organised and physical Palace side who looked content with penalties at this point.

With what was to be the final kick of regular time, Bruno summed up the evening’s performance as his desperate effort from range was dragged well wide before the referee blew for full-time and sent us to penalties.

Chris Wood stepped up for the first penalty and made no mistake. Luka Milivojevic then followed for Palace, but his spot-kick was saved well by Nick Pope before Trippier made it 2-0 with an emphatic finish in front of the Leazes end.

Midfielder Will Hughes put Palace on the board before Joelinton restored our two-goal lead despite Johnstone getting a hand to his shot. Joel Ward sent Pope the wrong way to make it 3-2, then Sven Botman chipped a tame effort down the middle that was saved.

Pope handed Guimaraes the chance to win it after saving Mateta’s effort, but the Brazilian blazed over after a stuttering run up. With his third and final save, Pope then denied Ebiowei’s effort to send Newcastle through and save Bruno’s blushes!

Newcastle now turn their attentions to Chelsea on Saturday as Howe’s high-flying Mags look to secure third-place heading into the World Cup break.

Starting XI: Pope, Manquillo, Lascelles, Burn, Targett, Shelvey, Longstaff, Joelinton, Anderson, Saint-Maximin, Wood

Subs: Karius, Trippier, Botman, Schar, Lewis, Murphy, Almiron, Willock, Guimaraes

  1. No TV in the USA but it doesnt sound like I missed much. I trust this site and NUFC.com to give a fair accounting of our games. Will Southgate put Pope in for the ineveitable pens in the QF of the WC?

  2. Living in America I am quite attuned to Americanisms creeping into the British Culture. One I am surprised by is that something “is coming outta left field”. I am surprised that it means anything to Brits as it is a baseball term. The origin is supposedly from Chicago, where I live. In the early days of baseball the Chicago Cubs played on a field where there was a lunatic asylum behind the left field. Supposedly the screams from the asylum could be heard by fans and players alike and the term outta left field entered the American lexicon.

That’s the story, I am not sure if I believe it.

  3. Now for Chelsea… I think we will see an unchanged team from last weekend. I doubt ASM will start but he will be subbed on for Murphy at some point.

  4. I have looked at other Blogs/YouTubers and am amazed at some of the suggestions for Jan. Eden Hazard? Really!!! Injured for 2 years and on 400k a week tax free. THAT Eden Hazard!!! I know we have the money, but are we that stupid?

  5. You (I) have to be nice to people sometimes Prem. I think I might appear as a grump sometimes, but it is not about the writers or posters on here. It is always about the badly chosen managers. It is not even about the players as I am mostly behind them.

I have nothing but respect for all on here, including the Aussies who I had a small disagreement with.

Even through the bad times (Ashley) we stuck together. Am I going into another Dire Straights song – Brothers in Arms 🙂

  6. We are on the way to great things.

We will win the Premier League in the next 3 years.

We will win the Champions League in the next 5 years.

    We deserve it!!!!

And I really hope Eddie is the one who takes us there because I think he is an amazing person.

  9. Glad to see Howe drawing praise

He is such a refreshing presence not only at nufc after years of poor choices as manager but in English premiership football.

So the latest view is his ability to attract talent to the club. Wwhile in the world of football there seems to be little to compete with the money on offer, howe’s willingness to invest in, support and develop players must look a good option.

Imagine looking in from the outside to compare the ranting of Klopp, ego of conte, or professionalism of Howe.

potter and ten hag seem rational but the clubs are basket cases and pep has the luxury to go after established talent. Is howe’s only real competition arteta at the top ??

  11. England squad? Good thing that Wilson is in but he wont play. It will be a back 6 with Rice screening McGuire.

    T-Rex

    Tripps Walker Stones Mcguire Shaw

    Rice

    Bellingham

    Foden Kane Sterling

  12. Prem – you called it mate!! 😳🔮

I’m happy with Bmth at home you know. It’s not one of the big boys but it’s not a banana skin either – and it’s one Howe will definitely not want to lose to!!.

  13. PremAndUp: Southgate normally plays 4-2-3-1with Rice & Phillips anchoring the midfield

Not true Prem mate, he plays 5 at the back and Rice as a screen for McGuire.

  14. Southgate will just not drop Mcguire no matter how shyte he is and will build the team to make up for his deficiencies. That will be – NO MIDFIELD.

Hope Kane, Foden or Sterling produce moments of brilliance.

  15. I remember seeing an analysis by Alan Shearer on how the Rice Phillips combination worked and he called it a double pivot
I don’t dispute that McGuire is rubbish, but Simply putting rice in as a DM to cover his inadequacies has not been the tactic

  16. Southgate has this obsession with having a clone of himself in the team and protecting him at all costs. McGuire – slow, prone to a mistake, lower level PL at best.

  18. We can agree to disagree Prem.

You think it is a double pivot.

I think it is a screen for McGuire.

  19. there are much better options at CB for England than Mcguire. We have 3. BDB, Matt Targett and Nick Pope.

  20. Absolutely fuming that Southgate has again picked McGuire and overlooked Burn. Even if he didn’t pick Burn there are much better defenders than McGuire. Southgate sat in the stands at SJP and watched Burn doing what he does best. He’s also versatile and plays in different positions. Southgate is a moron.

  21. I read the article Prem and he is full of shyte. Just coz he references Herbert Chapman in the 1920s doesn’t mean he knows what he is talking about. It is the TWO THOUSAND TWENTIES, a hundred years later!

Southgate does not play a wing-back system. He plays in a 5 at the back and a screen for Harry McGuire hoping for moments of brilliance from his 3 forward. It is a modified Bruce system of 7-3-0, whereas Bruce was a 9-0-1.

Just because people write on the internet, doesn’t mean they are right. This applies to this Tweedale guy whose article you linked and most likely me as well 🙂

  22. England have the easiest group and had the easiest qualifying group. The deficiencies will most likely not show up until the 1st difficult game which will end in penalties. Scotland even got a draw against England FFS and deserved to win it.

  23. I stand to be corrected where Gareth plays to the strengths of the England squad which is the forwards and drops McGuire.

  24. The only other time I have felt this strongly about a player for England was ROONEY. Where his legs had clearly gone and Mr Roy built the team around him and let him choose his position. I said this on here at the time, if anybody can remember?

  25. Miggy totally respectful in his acceptance of player of the month. I am not going to be that way, Alice Band should learn something, the diving sh!thouse.

  26. Plus, he is a good manager. He took a nothing team from 91st in the league to the Pl and kept them up for 5 years!!! Brucie said Eddie relegated them but Eddie took them from 91st to the PL FFS!

  27. I have a real bee in my bonnet about Chris Wodd and especially Paul at The Toon Review who is now trying to re-write his own history.

Wood was bought for a purpose when Callum was injured. He was bought for the Eddie blueprint/plan to keep us up.

  28. Young Anderson has been getting some stick for not being brilliant the other night. Bit harsh I thought as he wasn’t bad and played wide right for probably his first time ever. It’s a tough position to play. I’ve seen Miggy, Murphy and Fraser doing no better. Anderson’s a no 10 (ish)

      (Quote)

  29. Georgio, man. People bubble on about our players after about 45 mins of them being on the pitch and not understanding their role. As I have said, the classic example is every fcn body on the Toon Review and Chris Wood.
