Callum Wilson update arrives from Qatar after NUFC star misses training on Tuesday

As reported by The Telegraph, Newcastle United star Callum Wilson was missing from training with the England squad just 24 hours after making his World Cup debut in a 6-2 victory over Iran.

Both Wilson and James Maddison, who was missing from the matchday squad yesterday, were absent from today’s session, but it is hoped that this is just a precautionary measure for our number nine.

Speaking from England’s camp in Qatar, The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Wilson is ‘said to be fine’, stating that “nothing is said to be of concern” with the absent striker.

Given his injury record, it would be understandable for the 30-year-old to have a separate training programme to some of his Three Lions teammates, so this could explain why he’s been away from the main group.

The former Bournemouth man looked lively when he came off the bench yesterday, setting up Jack Grealish for England’s sixth goal. It was an unselfish bit of play and something that appeared to impress Gareth Southgate, who praised Wilson in his post-match interview.

As we head into our second game of the group stage on Friday against USA, hopefully we can see our star striker have another big impact on the biggest stage in world football.

You can watch Ornstein’s update below, which features positive updates on Harry Kane and Harry Maguire, but confirmation that Toon target James Maddison is still struggling with a knee injury:
