According to CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs, Newcastle United have turned down the chance to sign Brighton winger Leandro Trossard.
The winger is out of contract in 18 months after the Seagulls activated a one-year extension last week, however it’s believed his agent has offered the Belgian international to a host of clubs.
Jacobs reports that Newcastle opted against pursuing the player, as Eddie Howe is keen to recruit a ‘younger option’ out wide.
The Belgian international is a quality player and versatile attacker who can play anywhere across the front three, but it’s easy to understand our approach given Trossard turned 28 last month.
It’s thought Liverpool and Manchester United also rejected the chance to sign the Brighton star, however Spurs are now showing ‘genuine interest’, while Chelsea are yet to rule out a move.
With Miguel Almiron and Ryan Fraser both turning 29 next month and Jacob Murphy approaching his 28th birthday, it makes sense for us to invest in a long-term option out wide – even if the Premier League proven Trossard could improve us in the short-term.
