Keith Downie tips Toon to sign out-of-contract midfielder – One to watch after Bruno blow?

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie believes Youri Tielemans is one to watch for Newcastle fans, saying he’d be ‘surprised’ if the club didn’t launch a bid for the Leicester City star.

The Belgian’s contract is set to run out in the summer, so we could pick him up on a free in just six months – or on a cut-price fee this month – and Downie believes it could be a ‘perfect’ fit.

Despite a poor first-half of the season for the Foxes, the midfielder has shown flashes of brilliance and remains a ‘long-standing’ target. Given Bruno Guimaraes could be facing a spell on the sidelines, many feels we’ll crank up our search for another midfielder in the coming days.

With a limit on what we can spend until we can increase our commercial revenue, securing a bargain deal for a player of his quality and Premier League experience may be ideal.

Of course, we won’t be the only team in for the 25-year-old, but few can offer the kind of long-term project we are currently building.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Downie had this to say:

“Tielemans is a player they’ve had a long-standing interest in, and I would be surprised if they don’t go for him.

“I think it would be a mistake if they don’t. I just think he would be perfect.

What he would do is he would raise the standard moving forward as well.”

  1. He was a class player, but the last few months he has looked way off even his body language showing disinterest?
Could be the form of the team, new contract offer or just wanting away.
Still would prefer Maddison as he still looks the part before his injury.
We need cover for Shelvey, now Bruno and Anderson injured so we are light in midfield, but Longstaff is improving with Willock also and Joelinton doing well. The next injury could be a big problem. Hwtl
