Fan footage shows Gordon & Ashby’s spine-tingling welcome + Shelvey’s emotional send off

Last night, new signings Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby came onto the pitch to a huge Geordie welcome just moments before the big game at St James’ Park.

It was an electric atmosphere in the build up the kick-off and a taste of what’s to come after the 21-year-old duo completed late moves over the final few days of the January transfer window.

Gordon completed a £40m move from Everton on Sunday, while Ashby sealed a deadline day switch from West Ham, costing the club £3m as fresh competition for Kieran Trippier.

It was great to hear fans chanting Gordon’s name inside the stadium – a moment which will have left the youngster on cloud nine following a hoard of abuse at boyhood club Everton.

Speaking to his new Toon followers on Twitter after the game, the scouse winger said: “What a welcome! My first few days in the Toon have been special… from the people in the city to the fans in the stadium, everyone has been so welcoming. Can’t wait to play in front of you all & cheer on the boys at Wembley!!!”

Jonjo Shelvey also received a fitting send off at St James’, coming onto the pitch to wave goodbye to Newcastle fans ahead of his deadline day switch to Nottingham Forest.

Watch below as he bid farewell to the Toon Army and his former Newcastle teammates during the half-time break:
