Newcastle set to release five players at the end of the 2022/23 season – Report

As reported by the Northern Echo, Newcastle are expected to release Loris Karius, Mark Gillespie, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett and Matty Longstaff when their contract expire this summer.

Both Karius and Gillespie were signed as backup keepers – Karius more recently had his contract extended following the departure of Karl Darlow to Hull, but it seems neither will be part of next season’s squad.

Clark has spent this season on loan at Sheffield United in the Championship where has managed just seven starts as the Blades push for automatic promotion.

At 33, the Irish international is certainly entering the twilight of his career and will leave the club once his contract expires at the end of his loan spell at Bramall Lane.

Similar to Clark, Dummett is an ageing defender who has struggled with injuries and game time. He has spent 23 years of his life with the Magpies, however, it looks like he’ll be released in a few months time.

Following a promising start to his career, Matty Longstaff has failed to develop following a couple of disappointing loan spells, with his latest spell at Colchester cut short due to a serious knee injury.
