Newcastle plot move for exciting striker likened to a ‘young Alan Shearer’ – Report

According to The Mirror, Newcastle are keeping a close eye on Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, joining Tottenham and Chelsea in the race to sign the young forward.

The towering 18-year-old is enjoying an impressive debut season in the top flight, bagging three goals and two assists in just 303 minutes of Premier League football and scoring their winner in Tuesday’s FA Cup win over Stoke City.

He’s impressed new boss Roberto De Zerbi and has been compared to a ‘young Alan Shearer’ for his physicality, aerial prowess and old school approach, with his game time increasing following the sale of Leandro Trossard and Neal Maupay.

A move for the Irishman would make sense – we are clearly investing potential and Dan Ashworth, formerly of Brighton, will already have an extensive knowledge on the player’s background and ability.

Having previously rejected a move to Liverpool due to a fear of not getting enough minutes, the teenager may prioritise game time over money and will need that to be guaranteed should he be persuaded to join Tyneside.

The South coast club drive a hard bargain – just look at the Moises Caicedo saga in January – and will be tough sellers, but it’s easy to see why we’re tracking Ferguson, with a new striker likely to arrive in the summer to replace Chris Wood. Watch footage of him in action below:
