Newcastle eye ambitious moves for unsettled England star, PL winger and German international – Report

Some big claims have emerged from The Mail this afternoon, who report that Newcastle have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Mason Mount.

The same piece also reveals that we are big admirers of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz and Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes.

As for Mount, it’s thought the England international is unsettled at Stamford Bridge after rejecting a host of contract offers. His current deal is due to expire next summer, meaning the Blues may reluctantly cash in on the 24-year-old is a deal can’t be agreed in the coming months.

It’s an ambitious target, if true, and one we’d do well to pull off if Liverpool are also in the hunt for the midfielder.

After reporting on our interest in Barnes and Wirtz – teammates of long-term targets James Maddison and Moussa Diaby – the piece adds that we are also on the lookout for another right-sided centre-back to compete with Fabian Schar.

Mount would be a statement signing, but any move seems like a non-starter if we fail to secure Champions League football – something that could also play a key role in our ongoing pursuit of Maddison.
