New report reveals 18 names on Newcastle’s watchlist as Toon plan for busy summer

In an in-depth piece on Newcastle United’s summer transfer plans, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has revealed a host of names on our current list of targets.

To save you sifting through the entire report, we’ve brought together every name mentioned in the article; which states that we’re expected to pursue a right-sided centre-back, left-back, two midfielders (a No 8 and ‘dynamic’ No 6) and two forwards this summer.

Here’s the list in full, followed by some more details on all of the below:

Left-backs:

  • Kieran Tierney (Arsenal)
  • Renan Lodi (on loan at Nottingham Forest from Atletico Madrid)
  • Antonee Robinson (Fulham)

Midfielders:

  • Moises Caicedo (Brighton)
  • Ruben Neves (Wolves)
  • Edson Alvarez (Ajax)
  • Amadou Onana (Everton)
  • Joao Palhinha (Fulham)
  • Youri Tielemans (Leicester)
  • Conor Gallagher (Chelsea)
  • Scott McTominay (Man Utd)

Attackers:

  • James Maddison (Leicester)
  • Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (Napoli)
  • Raphinha (Barcelona)
  • Alex Scott (Bristol City)
  • Joao Pedro (Watford)
  • Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao)
  • Brennan Johnson (Nottingham Forest)

Eddie Howe is thought to be a ‘long-term admirer’ of Tierney, while Lodi has featured in recent conversation after Newcastle considered a move for the Brazilian last summer. As for Robinson, it’s thought the USA international is someone we’ve watched.

In midfield, Caicedo is likely to cost too much, Palhinha an Onana are players who’ve been on Nickson’s list for some time, Alvarez (Ajax) and Neves (Wolves) are admired, though more athletic alternatives could be pursued instead, while our interest in Tielemans – soon to be a free agent – may be revived, despite ongoing concerned about his huge wage demands. Gallagher is a ‘favourite’ of Howe’s following our interest in January and Scott McTominay’s ‘physicality and experience’ is valued by the NUFC boss.and

In attack, Maddison ‘remains of keen interest’, Bristol City’s Scott has ‘caught our eye’ after his superb displays in the second tier, while Kvaratskhelia and Raphinha are ambitious targets who may be out of our reach. Watford Joao Pedro remains of interest after several bids for the Brazilian over the summer, along with Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams; the Spanish sensation we almost pursued instead of Anthony Gordon. Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson is also ‘liked’ by our recruitment team, impressing in his debut season in the Premier League with nine goals in all competitions.
