Callum Wilson has backed James Maddison to leave Leicester City, believing the heavily linked midfielder will move on to a “bigger club” soon.
Newcastle had two bids rejected for the Foxes star last summer and it seems our interest hasn’t gone anywhere, with recent reports claiming he remains one of Eddie Howe’s top targets.
Wilson – a ‘fellow Coventry kid’ – was delighted to see him start for England on Sunday and may be secretly hoping he seals a move to St James’ Park in a few months time, with the pair often pictured together during our World Cup campaign in Qatar.
Maddison is out of contract in 12 months time and seems almost certain to leave the King Power Stadium. However, a top-four finish could be key to our hopes, with Man City and Spurs also in the mix.
Speaking on the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast alongside Michail Antonio, Wilson had this to say after the 26-year-old started in England’s 2-0 win over Ukraine:
“He is a top player and eventually he will move on from Leicester and go to a bigger club,”
“I think he deserves that opportunity, especially for how long he’s been at Leicester and how much he’s given the club.”
“Happy for him. Fellow Coventry kid. Buzzing for him.”
