Newcastle 6-1 Spurs: Toon thrash top-four rivals in memorable display at SJP

A performance that will go down in Premier League history and a huge step towards a top-four finish as Newcastle United slaughtered Spurs at St James’ Park.

It was a huge game – arguably the biggest we’ve seen on Tyneside in many a year. We had to respond to last Saturday’s defeat and knew a win would not only send us six clear of Spurs, but nine ahead of Liverpool after they won again yesterday.

We didn’t just win, it was a demolition job. Our best display of the season just when we needed to produce and a victory that’s sent us third. That first half will live long in the memory – FIVE up in just 21 minutes, some outstanding team goals, sublime finishes, and first to every loose ball against a Spurs side who just couldn’t cope with our pace, power, precision and energy.

It was quite literally raining goals. Murphy opened the scoring from the angle just two minutes in, pouncing on the rebound after Joelinton’s shot was parried wide. A couple of minutes later, Joelinton made it two after latching onto Schar’s through ball and rounding Lloris, then it was three within 10 minutes when Murphy rifled a brilliant long range effort into the bottom corner. His celebration said it all – sheer joy and an element of disbelief from the boyhood Toon fan who couldn’t quite believe what was happening! Credit must also go to Schar, who not only set up our second but won the ball back seconds before Murphy’s stunner.

It was chucking it down and the Spurs floodgates had well and truly opened. Three then became four as the Alexander Isak show began. It was a typically cool finish from the Swede, but the assist from Willock was simply stunning, as his outside of the foot pass took out the entire Spurs defence to send Isak clean through. Are you watching, Gareth Southgate?!

Another lovely move – this time down the right – had a similar result, as Isak bagged his second to make it 5-0 just 21 minutes in. Tottenham were abysmal, but we were every bit as good as they were bad.

It could’ve been six had Willock kept his shot down just moments before the break, then Longstaff went within inches of getting his name on the scoresheet after his deflected effort flew just wide. The half-time whistle went and a standing ovation followed. THE most emphatic first half display we’ve seen at St James’ Park and game over against a side who suddenly looked down and out of the top-four race.

To keep the Spurs fans that stayed interested, Harry Kane pulled one back after beating Schar and sliding a low strike past Pope. It was a shame to see us lose our clean sheet, but we added another 15 minutes later, as Wilson latched onto Almiron’s effort to make it 6-1.

It could’ve got worse for the visitors, as Gordon went close after a swift counter between him and Willock saw the subbed on winger go close. There was also Dan Burn’s header blocked by his own man, denying the big man from adding even more gloss to the scoreline.

When I left for the game, I told a couple of mates we were going to batter Spurs today. I was clearly confident and had full belief Howe’s Mags would respond to last Saturday’s setback, but I didn’t expect that! An incredible day and monumental win, which feels like one giant stride towards that Champions League finish.

Next up, another chance to extend on our lead at Everton on Thursday, before Southampton come to St James’ on Sunday. HWTL!.

  1. A highlight of this season for me will be Murphys reaction & facial expressions after his second – priceless!!.

So pleased for the lad coz he waited for his chance and is repaying Howe with bells on!!.

I also loved Isak with Willock after scoring from that pass.

    It’s just been a bl00dy good day 👌🏻

  2. Maybe it’s a bit premature, but I think we could be looking to upgrade to an ECL squad rather than a Europa League Squad.

Personally, I don’t think there is that much difference.

We have been linked with Rice, Maddison and Diaby who together are a lot of money. Whilst I would be happy with any of them there are four other positions that need addressing and if we miss out on any of those three there are cheaper alternatives.

GK. Whatever happens to Dubravka, Darlow or Karius we are going to need one young keeper and Bazunu (21) from Soton would be a good shout at under £20m.

LB. I know we have been looking at Kieran Tierney (25) at £25m but Destiny Udogie (20) from Udinese for £20m is an alternative.

RCB I was fancying the giant Tah from Leverkusen, but at 27 I think I’d look at Silva (19) from Benfica for £25m, There are options here.

St. Beto (25) a giant from Udinese, an old fashioned no9 for £12m has to be a snip replacing Wood.

So what about Rice, Maddison and Diaby. With a saving of £100m between them
DM Guillamon (23) from Valencia £20m
AM Simons (20) PSV Eindhoven £27m and
    RW Edwards (24) Sporting £22m

It’s all a post Spurs High

  3. Prem – I look at what Howe has done with Schar, Longstaff, Willock, Murphy, Joelinton & I honestly think he can develop any player that has potential & most importantly the right attitude & character.

I look at players like Anthony at Man Utd or Richarlison at Spurs and a lot of the Chelsea new boys & they are big time Charlie’s.

You look at Bruno & Isak & the effort they put in, the way they play for the team & the way they rally the crowd & it’s everything you want in a black & white shirt.

I figured out the other night that the £250m we have spent equates to Wesley Fofana, Enzo Fernandez & Marc Cucurella – I wouldn’t swap any of our boys for any of those 3.

Avoid the mercenaries & go for players who will feed into & feed off what we are building, particularly at SJP & im happy mate 👌🏻

  4. Fab result today.

7 left and 4 of them against teams in bottom 5 and 4 at home means nufc have to be feeling good.

Said last week the loss was a moment in time and what happens next is now more important.

so it goes after todays result, starting with Everton on Thursday and continuing on Sunday against Southampton, which coincidentally is the annual get together for the toon army in America .. mobtown will be bouncing

    Bring it!

  6. Still a bit shocked tbh, the text messages I got from my mates at half time, all saying how great we looked and how good a job Eddie is doing was a strange feeling. Aren’t we supposed to be the leagues laughing stock ? Got so used to feeling like **** for 14 years under the fatman that I had completely forgotten how good we could be and were before he bought us.

  7. I sometimes wonder what Ashley thinks when he sees our success. If he’d just invested properly, and he had the means to do it, PIF have not made crazy huge purchases, it could have been him with a champions league team on his hands!

Such an idiot for mistreating our team so badly all those years.

  8. Still in shock. Everyone was shell shocked including Spurs. Can’t remember last time we played so well.

With 4 of the remaining 7 games left at home it really would be a huge disappointment if we didn’t make too 4. If we do then I suspect spending might go through the roof!

  9. Stu, have you tried phoning Eric at all, I know you met up once, thought you may have his number?
We are all really worried about his long term absence from the blog, it’s not like him.

  10. And by the way… I think Spurs should’ve had Kulusevski red carded for his kick at Joe Willock’s nuts! Shocking tackle, nowhere near the ball, (well the football anyway), and VAR didn’t even look at it. AGAIN!

Imagine if they’d been down to 10 men and 5-0 down! 😬😳😳

  11. Stellini sacked! 😬😳😂😂 how many managers have been sacked after losing to us? A few I think!

  12. Wow .. so spurs players offer to reimburse their supporters after Sunday cos they were so bad.

Anyhow I see villa won again displacing spurs to 6th. Villa could have a big say in the euro positions as they play 4 of the top 8 in their last 5 games

  13. Good on Longstaff for being so honest about his experience as a player under Bruce.

I’m sure he’ll get slaughtered from Bruceys pundit mates who will maintain he’s such a great guy – but I take my hat off to Longstaff.

Also, I dont think the lad is a b!tchy person and said it for those reasons. I’ve seen a number of his interviews & he comes across as a very levelheaded & honest lad.
