Powerful left-back linked with Newcastle move and conflicting Moussa Diaby claims emerge

Transfer season is approaching and there’s a new name being linked with a summer move to St James’ Park – Brazilian left-back Carlos Augusto.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Newcastle have been keeping a close eye on Augusto – who currently plays for Serie A side Monza – and could launch an end-of-season bid for the 24-year-old.

Inter Milan and Juventus have also been linked with the highly-rated South American, who has shown his versatility this season by operating at left-back, centre-back and on the left wing.

That could appeal to Eddie Howe, as could his powerful 6ft’ frame. Who knows, perhaps Burn’s physical presence and ability to tuck in when Trippier bombs on means a player of Augusto’s ilk will be targeted this summer?

Elsewhere, some conflicting claims have emerged on Moussa Diaby over the past week. On Monday, The Mail said Newcastle had ‘dropped’ their interest in the Bayer Leverkusen winger, yet reports from Germany and France over the past 24 hours suggest the exact opposite.

SportBILD state we are ‘getting serious’ about a summer move for the 23-year-old, insisting we ‘will make an offer’ for the €60m-rated Frenchman.

Then to L’Equipe, who claim we will launch a bid for Diaby should we secure Champions League football, stating that club representatives have been tracking the winger ever since the Saudi takeover went through in 2021.

Given the links last summer and another superb season from the Leverkusen star, I’d imagine our interest has only grown – although the list of suitors may have too, with PSG, Arsenal and Real Madrid also linked in recent days.
