Relegated gem on Newcastle’s radar as Toon plan six summer signings – The Athletic

Newcastle United are showing interest in Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia and will be in the market for SIX summer signings, according to The Athletic.

They report that we are planning to bring in a right-sided centre-back, left-back, two midfielder – ideally a No 6 and No 8 – along with two attackers.

It’s thought Man Utd’s Scott McTominay remains on our radar, as the club value his ability to play as a holding or box-to-box midfielder – but it’s interesting to see Lavia’s name mentioned in their latest piece.

The Belgian was superb in Southampton’s 3-1 defeat at St James’ Park last month and has stood out in an otherwise awful Saints side this season. They suffered relegation on Saturday following their 2-0 defeat at home to Fulham and the highly-rated 19-year-old is almost certain to leave this summer.

The Athletic state that Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is also a player of interest, but the club accept that the Ecuadorian could cost huge money.

It’s also said that Leicester’s Youri Tielemans and Aston Villa’s Leander Dendoncker were considered by the club back in January, although it’s unclear if either are still of interest. I imagine we’ll aim higher than Dendoncker, though Tielemans on a free transfer could appeal.
