Neville & Carragher release top-four verdict after Liverpool close gap on Newcastle & Man Utd

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville believe Newcastle are more likely to drop out of the top four than Man Utd following Liverpool’s late surge for a Champions League finish.

Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Leicester on Monday puts them just one point behind both us and Man United, although we still have a game in hand over Jurgen Klopp’s men and maintain our superior goal difference.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher described Thursday’s game against Brighton as ‘huge’, feeling there’ll be a ‘big worry on’ if we drop points against the Seagulls. Win, however, and we’d be FOUR clear of Liverpool with two games to play.

Even if we lose to Brighton, we’d have two winnable final fixtures in Leicester at home – who looked a complete mess against Liverpool – and Chelsea away – who will have nothing to play for and are on a terrible run of form. So, while Thursday is undoubtedly massive, it will remain in our hands even if we do suffer defeat at St James’ Park.

Neville feels certain that Liverpool will pick up maximum points from their final two games – Aston Villa at Anfield and a trip to Southampton – meaning we must pick up two wins from our final three games. One win and two draws could be enough, but it would then go down to goal difference.
