Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have included Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Kieran Trippier in their Premier League team of the season, while Eddie Howe is Carragher’s manager of the season.
The former Liverpool man included both Trippier and Botman in his back line while Neville had Trippier and Pope in his with Newcastle maintaining the second best defence in the league.
Howe’s men secured Champions League qualification for the first time in 21 years on Monday night, with these awards highlighting just how important our defence has been in securing that.
Fabian Schar can feel a little hard done by – some fans may even argue that he has had a better season than Botman – but the Swiss defender is certainly adored amongst Toon supporters.
It’s also great to see Howe get the credit he deserves for such an incredible transformation in the last 18 months and hopefully he has done enough to wrap up the end-of-season award.
