Newcastle showing ‘strong interest’ in Mohamed Simakan – The Guardian

Another day, another new name linked with a potential summer move to St James Park. This time, it’s RB Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan.

This comes from The Guardian, who report that we’re showing ‘strong interest’ in the Frenchman but face competition from Arsenal.

The 23-year-old ticks plenty of boxes. Not only is he an athletic right-sided centre-back who could be an ideal long-term partner for Sven Botman, the former France U21 international is comfortable at right-back.

The Guardian’s Ed Aarons reports that his versatility is hugely appealing to Newcastle, who will be looking for utility players able to operate in several positions to help us cope with the hectic schedule ahead.

However, it’s thought the former Strasbourg star ‘will not come cheap’, as he signed a new deal in December to keep him at Leipzig until 2027.

Our interest makes plenty of sense, but I’d be surprised if we spent big money on a centre-back this summer – especially if FFP restrictions has left us with a slightly more modest budget.
