Newcastle launch £23m bid but Chelsea clause proving problematic – The Athletic

According to The Athletic, Newcastle have offered £23m for Tino Livramento; an offer Southampton are unlikely to accept due to a previous sell-on clause agreed with Chelsea.

As the report highlights, Chelsea are due a big portion of any future sale after inserting a sell-on clause into his £4m move from Southampton back in August 2021.

It’s also understood that Chelsea will receive a higher percentage of any sale should the price increase. For example, a 60% sell-on clause exists if a £30m deal was agreed with Southampton – banking them £18m – but that sell-on percentage would increase to 56% if a £50m sale went through, allowing the Saints to bank £28m.

As a result, Newcastle’s £23m offer (which would earn Southampton £15m) is unlikely to be accepted by St Mary’s chiefs, who initially quoted a whopping £50m for the versatile full-back.

Newcastle are not willing to spend above £30m on the England U21 international, meaning a compromise must be reached between the two clubs to strike a deal. The good news, however, is that there’s ‘optimism’ a fee can be agreed that works for all parties.

It’s thought Brighton are also keen, but Dan Ashworth is leading our pursuit after attempting to bring Livramento to the Amex during his time on the South Coast.
