Newcastle United defender Javier Manquillo has been granted a summer move away and looks set for a return to Spain.
The right-back is out of contract in 12 months time, but Newcastle have a gentleman’s agreement that allows the player to leave on a free transfer.
Manquillo wants a move back to his homeland and La Liga sides Getafe and Celta Vigo are both showing interest in the 29-year-old.
It’s my understanding that Newcastle will not receive a fee for the Spaniard, but it will free up space on the wage bill and create room for another arrival as the club work on a deal for versatile Southampton full-back Tino Livramento.
Rafa Benitez brought Manquillo to St James’ Park back in July 2017, where he left Atletico Madrid before spending six years on Tyneside.
He’s been a solid servant who has filled in admirably during some tough times. However, with Kieran Trippier now a regular at right-back, Emil Krafth returning from injury and Livramento the latest name on Newcastle’s wishlist, a summer exit makes sense for all parties.
