After The Athletic confirmed yesterday that Liverpool were ‘exploring a move’ for Toon target Dominik Szoboszlai, Sky Germany’s Phillip Hinze has now issued an update on the RB Leipzig star.
He reports that Liverpool are showing ‘concrete’ interest, but insists Newcastle remain in the race for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder.
There’s been ‘no official offer’ as of today and his £61m release clause is yet to be activated. However, any club wishing to trigger that buyout clause will have to do so by midnight tomorrow, as it’s set to expire on 30th June.
After that, Hinze explains that RB Leipzig will be in the driving seat over his asking price. They have already sold Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea for £52m and are in talks to sell Man City target Josko Gvardiol for upwards of £80m, so the Bundesliga club will not be short of money and left in no rush to sell.
A move for the Hungarian ‘is not off the table’ after tomorrow night, but it seems his price tag could go up – not down – once his £61m clause expires. If Szoboszlai really is our number one target after James Maddison’s move to Spurs, it may be in our interests to activate that buyout clause…
