Anthony Gordon has been speaking about imminent new signing Sandro Tonali, describing the Italian as “one of the top midfielders in the world.”
Our £40m man is due to represent England in the quarter-finals of the U21 European Championships tonight and has been discussing our move for the AC Milan star ahead of the 5pm clash with Portugal.
Gordon believes it’s another statement signing that “shows the direction we are going in” and has been impressed by the 23-year-old ever since he broke onto the scene at Brescia.
Now, he’s “really looking forward to playing with him” on Tyneside, with an official announcement expected to arrive on his signature in the next few days.
Speaking to the media ahead of tonight’s game, Gordon had this to say on Tonali:
“I knew him from his early days at Brescia.
“I remember seeing some clips of him before he went to Milan.
“He has excelled and is one of the top midfielders in the world.
“It shows the direction we are going in.
“I’m really looking forward to playing with him.”
