According to The Athletic, Newcastle will target one more ‘elite-level signing’ to join Sandro Tonali but will then revert to more ‘modest’ deals due to our ongoing battle with FFP restrictions.
Despite Eddie Howe wanting to recruit in at least four more areas, it’s thought outgoings will also be key to build up funds and lower our wage bill, with loan-to-buy deals also likely to be explored.
The Athletic report that a centre-back, full-back, wide forward and another midfielder remain on our wishlist to ensure the squad is ready for Champions League football for the first time in two decades.
Tonali’s fee of £55m has taken up the majority of the budget and it is believed that there is only room for one more big signing. With Harvey Barnes unlikely to be considered an ‘elite-level signing’, it’s fair to assume we may have another major move up our sleeve.
After that we will have to be smart with our money, trade well, move on fringe players or deadwood and perhaps rely on our scouting team to seek out some hidden gems that can arrive for relatively low fees.
I haven’t even seen us linked with another elite player, so if there’s any truth to that report it would be great.
