The EFL have confirmed that they made a mistake during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup draw with Newcastle being given the number 20 ball when we should’ve been 19, leading to a tie with Man City.
Reacting to the mistake, Howe said: “Not sure what to think really. I just laughed about it — you couldn’t make it up. One of those weeks, one of those starts to season with the Cup draws & fixture lists! But playing top teams makes us better.”
When assigning a number to each team in the draw, the clubs are listed alphabetically, but some supporters noticed an error in this year’s ranking which was later confirmed by the EFL.
Norwich City had been given the number 19 followed by Newcastle with 20, but obviously this is incorrect as Newcastle should come first alphabetically.
If the numbers had been correct, we would be looking at an away trip to Fulham, instead we must face one of the toughest fixtures in world football.
