According to reports, Newcastle United are lining up a January move for Kalvin Phillips; who starts alongside Kieran Trippier in England’s Euro qualifier against Italy tonight.
Phillips is making his first competitive start for his country since March this evening, with Trippier coming in at left-back in the 7.45pm kick-off at Wembley.
Mark Douglas at the i revealed last week that we are one of several Premier League clubs keen on the midfielder, who looks increasingly likely to leave Man City in January after a lack of game time under Pep Guardiola.
The Northern Echo have also reported on our interest today, stating that we’re ‘ready to strike’ a deal if the 27-year-old decides to leave the Etihad, with a loan-to-buy deal set to be explored. It’s believed Eddie Howe is looking to bring in a defensive midfielder in the new year, allowing Bruno Guimaraes to operate in a slightly more advanced role.
Phillips has made just two Premier League starts for the champions since sealing a £42m move from Leeds in the summer of 2022, so it’ll be interesting to see how he performs tonight.
