Sky Sports and ‘sources in Italy’ release Sandro Tonali update as ban is confirmed for teammate

Sky Sports’ Keith Downie has revealed that Sandro Tonali is now at the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Turin after a seven month suspension was confirmed for Italian teammate Nicolo Fagioli.

The Mail’s Craig Hope reports that ‘sources in Italy’ believe a ban is now likely for Tonali, but it’s unclear on the length as it is dependent on whether or not his gambling involved football – like Fagioli – or the teams he played for at the time.

The midfielder returned to training in Newcastle just yesterday and was in contention to make an appearance against Crystal Palace on Saturday, but its now ‘unlikely’ that he features this weekend after his return to Italy on Tuesday afternoon.

The whole case appears to have accelerated very quickly – especially given how long it took or is taking to investigate similar accusations against Ivan Toney and Lucas Paqueta.

Reporters in Italy are very much anticipating a ban to be handed out once this is resolved, we just have to hope that the evidence is not as damning as that of Fagioli and our star signing can reduce his potential suspension.

It had been reported that he was not involved in sports betting and had only gambled on blackjack and poker, yet the acceleration of this case and statement from his agent has left fans fearing a ban.
