Newcastle set to recall forgotten man with second loan move in the pipeline – Report

Newcastle United are set to terminate Isaac Hayden’s loan spell at Standard Liege, according to Football Insider.

The midfielder joined the Belgian giants over the summer and has appeared 11 times for the club so far this season. However, it’s believed he’ll return to Tyneside before joining a Championship side for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

Hayden came close to joining Luton Town over the summer before a move to the Hatters collapsed, with a switch to Sheffield Wednesday also falling apart a few days later. It’ll be interesting to see if the Owls reignite their interest this month amid claims he’ll be joining a second tier side this winter.

The 28-year-old is actually under contract at Newcastle until 2026, yet hasn’t kicked a ball in a black and white shirt for more than two years, with his last appearance for the club coming in a 4-0 defeat to Man City back in December 2021.

Speaking about his future just after he sealed a loan move to Liege last year, Hayden had this to say:

“I had options in England, but as I got older I wanted to try something different. I will be 29 at the end of the season. It was the right time for me to try a new championship, a new challenge.

“With no disrespect to the Championship, I think I’m better than that when I’m at my best. I have played for three of the best teams in the division, I know what I can do when I am fit and I preferred to change leagues to continue performing at a high level.

“I was playing every game for Newcastle, got injured and didn’t play again. Things can happen very quickly in football. My focus is only on Standard and we’ll see if one day I want to return to England.”
